Time for the proper use of Their, There, and They're thread to return
Please people it is not that hard!
Their = possessive as in, "their coup"
There = place as in, "over there where the trees used to be"
They're = contraction of they are as in, "They're distracting us with BS"

(Maybe a review of comma use as well)

38. irregardless ---grrrrr
:nuke:

ADVERB:
Nonstandard
Regardless.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ETYMOLOGY:
Probably blend of irrespective , and regardless
Usage Note:
Irregardless is a word that many mistakenly believe to be correct usage in formal style, when in fact it is used chiefly in nonstandard speech or casual writing. Coined in the United States in the early 20th century, it has met with a blizzard of condemnation for being an improper yoking of irrespective and regardless and for the logical absurdity of combining the negative ir- prefix and -less suffix in a single term. Although one might reasonably argue that it is no different from words with redundant affixes like debone and unravel, it has been considered a blunder for decades and will probably continue to be so.

30. If you've progressed beyond the 3rd grade, you shouldn't have to look it
up at all. It's one of the simpler aspects of this crazy language. I've never given crap about spelling or using big words without understanding what it means and I'm one of the most egregious offenders of comma abuse, but the there their they're thing just bugs me. Call me Mr. Monk.

20. really
I have to admit, I am guilty of all kinds of shorthand. I certainly understand why you would be upset when reading something in the professional setting, but an informal discussion forum like DU? I consider DU to be talking. When I talk, I often use short language, like saying "twenty-four-seven" as a short form of "twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week." I would not do that in a work setting, but on DU, I'm all for using the R and U shorthands.

I don't lose sleep over it nor do I ever really talk about it. I understand the informality of DU and I use shorthand too. It's just the r u2? stuff is just personally annoying. As I said, it looks like Prince is EVERYWHERE. Rofl. :hi:

Edited on Fri Feb-24-06 10:17 AM by myrna minx
I’m not a woman
I’m not a man
I am something that you’ll never understand

I’ll never beat u
I’ll never lie
And if you’re evil I’ll forgive u by and by

U - I would die 4 u, yeah
Darling if u want me 2
U - I would die 4 u

I’m not your lover
I’m not your friend
I am something that you’ll never comprehend

No need 2 worry
No need 2 cry
I’m your messiah and you’re the reason why

’cuz u - I would die 4 u, yeah
Darling if u want me 2
U - I would die 4 u

You’re just a sinner I am told
Be your fire when you’re cold
Make u happy when you’re sad
Make u good when u are bad

I’m not a human
I am a dove
I’m your conscious
I am love
All I really need is 2 know that
U believe

Yeah, I would die 4 u, yeah
Darling if u want me 2
U - I would die 4 u

Yeah, say one more time

U - I would die 4 u
Darling if u want me 2
U - I would die 4 u
2 3 4 u

I would die 4 u
I would die 4 u
U - I would die 4 u
U - I would die 4 u

 I live in Minneapolis, so Prince is omni-present anyway. :hi:

36. Kiss-
Prince - Kiss Lyrics
U don't have 2 be beautiful
2 turn me on
I just need your body baby
From dusk till dawn
U don't need experience
2 turn me out
U just leave it all up 2 me
I'm gonna show u what it's all about

U don't have 2 be rich
2 be my girl
U don't have 2 be cool
2 rule my world
Ain't no particular sign I'm more compatible with
I just want your extra time and your

Kiss

U got to not talk dirty, baby
If u wanna impress me
U can't be 2 flirty, mama
I know how 2 undress me (Yeah)
I want 2 be your fantasy
Maybe u could be mine
U just leave it all up to me
We could have a good time

U don't have 2 be rich
2 be my girl
U don't have 2 be cool
2 rule my world
Ain't no particular sign I'm more compatible with
I just want your extra time and your

Kiss

Yes
I think I wanna dance
Gotta, Gotta
Little girl Wendy's parade
Gotta, gotta, gotta

Women not girls rule my world
I said they rule my world
Act your age, mama (Not your shoe size)
Not your shoe size
Maybe we could do the twirl
U don't have 2 watch Dynasty
2 have an attitude
U just leave it all up 2 me
My love will be your food
Yeah

U don't have 2 be rich
2 be my girl
U don't have 2 be cool
2 rule my world
Ain't no particular sign I'm more compatible with
I just want your extra time and your

Kiss

25. Actually, it may be 'that hard'
Some people don't grasp the mechanics of language in the same way some (like me) don't grasp math.

I'm a high-ranking officer in the Language Gestapo, but I try to cut people some slack. It's often not a matter of stupidity or something.

english, what with its utter lack of solid rules, can be. OTOH if english isn't a second language, how can we graduate students that didn't receive the most basic skills. But hey, it's just a rant.
