If the gas gauge says E.
Then stop and get some gas.

If the oil light is on, stop and get the oil checked.

That is my PSA for the day.

1. If the oil light is on PULL OVER NOW
do not wait till the next highway exit
do not try to make it to a repair shop
pull over immediately, or your engine will be shot.

7. If the CHECK ENGINE light is on
Tighten the damn gas-cap!

Seriously!

It will take about 2-3 starts of the car for the light to go away. But that happened to me on 2 different cars and a auto shop will charge you $80 to run diagnostic tests to determine your gas cap wasn't on tight (but I'm a complainer and I got my money back ESPECIALLy after the mechanic said what the problem was and mentioned 'Oh, it's a common problem with these cars'. If it's a common problem why didn't you just check that first instead of charging me $80).
