I've always drove (sic) smaller, inexpensive cars or trucks because they're cheaper and conserve more energy but before I was partnered (and before I realized I was gay) and dating so-called "liberal" men they would always piss and moan about riding in a small car and not wanting to be seen in one.

Bitch about saving the environment all week but party in big cars, SUV's and boats all weekend.

My guess was that in case another man they knew saw them around town that they wanted to look like they had money.

6. I am a pretty big guy and I have a pretty big car

A Toyota Avalon, to be exact. It gets pretty good gas mileage, though, similar to a Camry.

He and his two sons are all large guys... and it has LOTS of headroom. I was amazed.

8. I haven't had a car in about 4 or 5 years

Since I moved to NYC, I don't really need one.

The public transportation here really makes having a car mostly unnecessary. Also, I don't like traffic in midtown and volunteer with a non-profit that's trying to get rid of traffic across a large swath of Manhattan.

18. Honestly, the only time I miss having a car here is maybe

once a month or once every other month -- when I'd like to get out of the city to go to the beach or something.

But even then, I can usually borrow or rent a car from someone.

It's such a weight off your shoulders not having to worry about car issues.

10. When in lived in Manhattan I only rented cars when I needed to drive

out of the five boroughs. In fact, I didn't even own my first car until I was in my early thirties after moving out of NYC. I went to school in Philadelphia where I used public trans, then moved for a year to Houston where I borrowed a car from my father, then straight to Manhattan, with some forays for periods elsewhere, but always renting or borrowing when needed. It was wild to buy my first car at 33 after driving for almost 20 years.

27. I don't buy that the title question and then the body of the post

at all pertain to each other. I *like* driving big vehicles and I do quite a bit of delivery work out of them. There are plenty of factors that end up justifying the cost of added fuel consumption

And, hey, after seeing my 5th road-side deer in a 3 mile stretch of interstate, I wasn't exactly crying in my beer over not driving around in a Tercel or something...
