9. The real MacArthur Park is a scary place.

Near downtown LA. It was a major hard drug scene, and major Salvadoran gang activity nearby. Wouldn't hang out there after dark.

12. In the winter it can rain for days at a time; the land of mudslides
though the park is in the flatlands near downtown

17. I remember eight days straight of heavy rains
If you look at the street drains in Los Angeles, you will wonder why they are so huge. There is a reason .....

Now, it ain't Seattle, but that is a good thing.

16. Wikipedia on the current status of MacArthur Park
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacArthur_Park

Despite the rather poetic homage paid to it, the real MacArthur Park became known for being a violent place after 1985 when drug-dealing, shoot-outs and rumored occasional drownings became somewhat common. The Westlake area also become infamous for the street sale of fake identification cards. When the lake was drained during construction of the Red Line tunnel hundreds of handguns (likely used in the commission of crimes) were found to have been disposed in the lakebottom over the years. Before the decline of the neighborhood, the park featured the traditional paddle-boats and a large fountain in the center of the lake; since the park was a popular middle-class destination for over fifty years, it was only a matter of time before it was reclaimed by the community.

Beginning in 2002 the Los Angeles Police Department, and business, and community leaders of the Alliance: Macarthur Park led a revitalization effort that has led to the installation of surveillance cameras, the opening of a recreation center, increased business, a new metro station, the return of the paddle boats and the fountain, and large community festivals attracting thousands. Most recently, in 2005 the park was celebrated for having the highest reduction of crime statistics per resident in the United States.

19. Read the lyrics. They're really quite beautiful. Written by Jimmy Webb...
He also wrote Witchita Lineman', 'By the Time I Get to Phoenix' and 'Galveston'.

Spring was never waiting for us, girl
It ran one step ahead
As we followed in the dance
Between the parted pages and were pressed
In love's hot, fevered iron
Like a striped pair of pants

MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!

I recall the yellow cotton dress
Foaming like a wave
On the ground around your knees
The birds, like tender babies in your hands
And the old men playing checkers by the trees

MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!

There will be another song for me
For I will sing it
There will be another dream for me
Someone will bring it
I will drink the wine while it is warm
And never let you catch me looking at the sun
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves of my life
You'll still be the one

I will take my life into my hands and I will use it
I will win the worship in their eyes and I will lose it
I will have the things that I desire
And my passion flow like rivers through the sky
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves of my life
I'll be thinking of you
And wondering why

MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
