2. I don't get the Sasha hate here, but I felt the same about Sarah
Hughes 4 years ago. I cannot explain it, but I just wanted to smack the crap out of her. No specific reason; just my reaction to her. So, y'all can hate Sasha, and I'll hate Sarah.

My daughter who is now 14 years old also wanted to smack Sarah Hughes. She could explain why just that she bothered her. She especially hated her little move at the end of her performance.

That's "pah-tay," I haven't figured out how to put the accent in there.

Some real assholes somehow produce good work in many endeavors (sports, music, literature, film, and so on).

I have often referred to hubby's maxim when enjoying the work of someone I don't like at all.

It's <Alt+130>. That gives you é. Just remember to hold the ALT button down while you type in the 130. Also...

Alt+131 = â
Alt+132 = ä
Alt+133 = à
Alt+136 = ê
Alt+134 = ê
Alt+135 = ê
Alt+139 = ï
Alt+160 = á
Alt+161 = í
Alt+164 = ñ

Bunch of others.

85. Thanks and just to put in a word for Tonya Harding...
... Tonya Harding was the best female jumper the USA has ever produced, and the only U.S. woman to land a triple axel in competition (until Kimmie Meissner recently landed one). It's too bad about all the unpleasantness in 1994, which ruined Harding's career and life. Her ex-husband Jeff (nee Gillooly, now Stone) says Tonya knew about it before the attack, while Tonya to this day denies that she knew. It's a he-says, she-says thing that they will both go to their graves sticking by what they say. Ultimately it's Tonya's fault anyway for marrying him in the first place and allowing him to intervene in her career, and not stopping him if she did know. So the blame does lie on her. Too bad for Tonya, it killed her career completely and nothing good has happened to her since, except a pathetic attempt at boxing. A real American tragedy. She did have some spectacular jumps and spins, although she didn't have much in the way of choreography or artistry, she was still a gifted athlete and a major asset to the U.S. field - until it all blew up in 1994. Although Nancy Kerrigan became wealthy and successful after her last Olympics, I don't think she has done anything worthwhile in skating - just going through the motions, mainly.

59. Nancy is a snot
who deserved to lose the gold to Oksana. She was very ungracious when it looked like she only got silver. I saw both of them a few months later at some "Skating Stars" program. Nancy came out, skated very blah-ly & only waved to the crowd which was clapping its hands off. Oksana, otoh, came out, skated phenomenally, & when the audience kept clapping & cheering, CAME BACK OUT & SKATED AGAIN!

She also refuses to forgive Tonya Harding, which would be understandable but for the fact that Nancy never would have gotten all the accolades, the $$ & the fame if her knee hadn't been bonked.

48. LOL!
I didn't much like Sarah either - too gangly for me. Funny thing, I think her sister shows serious promise. She is very artistic in a way her sister couldn't match. That said...

Sasha has always been a cold/hot thing with me. Which shows my general willingness to let bygones be bygones. ;-) My problem with Sasha's routine tonight was the idea planted by the mass media that some "groin injury" hurt her. It didn't. If she had a groin injury, she wouldn't have just hosed the first two jumps, but likely the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th. You get the idea...don't get me started on a groin injury added to a spiral sequence...I think she was capable, but perhaps the obvious nerves took their toll...I'll never really know I guess...

82. That's funny
Sarah Hughes really irritated me for some reason, too. Not to the point of wanting to smack her, but I just remember seeing her on TV and assuming she was some kind of snotty, arrogant, pushy kind of person when I didn't have anything to back this up! Weird feeling... It may have had a little to do with me liking Michelle Kwan more, but, sadly, it also had something (and I can't place my finger on what) to do with her appearance.

84. Double ditto on Sarah...
...we had SO rooted for Michelle Kwan four years ago, and when this forth-place who-the-hell-is-THIS-kid Sarah Hughes wins not the bronze, not the silver, but the freaking GOLD OLYMPIC MEDAL, there's some kind of cosmic injustice on a level that defies logic, or so I've been told by people who think I complain too much.

That plus the completely insane local coverage here on Long Island that Just. Wouldn't. Stop. You couldn't see anything on television that didn't have Sarah's image somehow attached to it. The parades, the interviews, ringing the opening bell at the stock exchange, skating before hockey games... it just never ended. That, and her voice made my ears hurt.

Now, being as it was winter 2002, and America needing something or someone to feel good about after 9/11, I can understand the tendency to give heroes, and kind of heroes, as much exposure as possible, but this was just plain nuts...

So, fast forward to Torino 2006, and God help me, Michelle and Sarah's lil' sister Emily. Michelle drops out after a poor practice and a groin injury, the local newsquackers are bitching about what a nasty old meanie Michelle was to bump poor Emily from the original roster in the first place, and breathlessly gushing how wonderful it to have two, count 'em, TWO HUGHES SISTERS IN A ROW competing in sequential Olympics!
One Newsday columnist actually had the mind to call the Hughes Sisters the "First Family of Skating".

During an opening credits intro to one of the night of skating, NBC slipped in a quick pan of Sarah gliding, in close-up, and she wasn't even competing this year.

Emily came in seventh place in Torino. Oh well...

Friday's Newsday, back cover --- teeny-tiny stamp-sized pictures of the three skaters who actually MEDALED (including pix of Sasha and Irina BOUNCING on the ice, just in case nobody noticed), and a BIG poster-sized page of the plucky kid from Long Island who came in SEVENTH PLACE, is Emily looking as graceful as a SWAN (IIRC, she may have bobbled a little too, but don't expect much coverage of that in these parts), and in glowing 200-point headlines --- "SEVENTH HEAVEN!".

Alright, Emily is probably a sweet kid, she's young (16 or 17 years old), and she'll probably compete in the next two winters Olympics, and she'll probably win a medal in either or both of them... and that's fine, and good luck to her.

Just keep her out of my face when it happens.

Sorry, she's a bush-bot and was kinda snooty about the whole Michelle Kwan thing. I was hoping that Irina would have beat Cohen because Irina is actually older than Michelle Kwan, when through some serious illnesses and still kicking butt.

BTW, that skating outfit she picked as the winner on Project Runway was absolutely ugly has hell. It was white and would clash with her pale skin (and this isn't busting on pale skin - I'm pale too and would never wear white) and the bodice makes the breasts almost look concave.

Here's the first part :D

Silver medal falls into Cohen's lap

By ART THIEL
P-I COLUMNIST

TURIN, Italy -- Michelle Kwan has to be sitting at home saying, "Hey, I can skate better than those women with a pulled groin muscle AND a buffalo on my back."

On the other hand, there's really no telling how things work in figure skating. Kwan, the U.S. skater slated to be the darling of the Olympics until she pulled up lame, might have turned in the performance of her life Thursday night, only to get skunked because she didn't learn to fall up like Sasha Cohen.

The presumptive darling-in-waiting, Cohen duplicated a clunky warmup with an equally clunky start to her long program in the women's free-skate finals, only to be as dumbfounded as rest of the Winter Olympics when she took silver.

Cohen said she "took off her dress" backstage and was about one Gatorade-bucket slam from a full dugout pout when somebody said to sequin up because she was about to medal.

"I was just as surprised as hopefully all of you were," she said after events, as they often do in figure skating, overtook logic and made her runner-up to Shizuka Arakawa.

79. The whole article had me laughing...
especially this line towards the bottom:

"Cohen's only other problem seemed to be her (Sasha's) attitude about the Olympic gold. Informed that the field was pulling an NFC West and collapsing around her, she seemed less than moved that she was, against all odds, about to draw hardware."

LOL. Too funny.

70. She fell on her ass twice and still took silver
That is an amazing accomplishment. The whole Bush thing is based on an article that is four years old. She was 16.

74. Exactly!!! I was rooting for her. She was on our team last night and
that is all I care about. Every thing doesn't have to revolve around politics either. Jeez. And I'd hate to know what I felt politicaly at ages 16 and 18. Some of these comments here are ridiculous.

80. I am amazed by Kimmie Meisner (sp?).
She is really, really something. I thought she kind of got shortchanged in the scoring on the long. She really impressed me in that she held 1st through the short until the final flight of skaters (she was in the 1st flight). I think she and Emily Hughes are really self-possessed and quite good for their age and experience.

83. Agreed -- Nick's was the best, and was the ONLY true skating outfit
So, add bad taste on top of everything else.

57. Women are nasty to each other. How can you hate someone you do not know?
I gotta say I cringed when Cohen fell. I was looking forward to a repeat of Tues. night. Same with Slutskya (sp?) from Russia. Any Olympic medal is a colossal achievement, especially in a sport as difficult as figure skating. Still, I was rooting for Slutskya for gold.

58. I think that Sasha was the most artistic of all the skaters
She was wonderful to watch, and showed major guts after she knew she already had no chance for the gold anymore.

67. The way she picked herself back up and finished well
Especially amid all the cheers from the Russians in the stands, well, I have to hand it to her - she did show a lot of guts. And she is a very talented skater, that's for sure.

69. yeah she's quite talented
sure, there are some skaters from the past who came across as arrogant, but they are all so talented that it is hard to give em crap, least in my book.

I was rooting for Slutskaya, myself.

78. Slutskaya in the last Olympics caused some commotion
b/c she thought she deserved the gold and not Hughes. When it comes to this level of competetion, these girls don't let anything stand in their way.

68. I guess I hold the unpopular opinion, but
Edited on Fri Feb-24-06 12:06 PM by distantearlywarning
I actually kind of like her. She's very graceful and actually acts her programs instead of just ignoring the music and doing all the moves in some kind of robotic sequence. I like Irina Slutskaya too, but for different reasons. I was bummed that both of them hosed up the long program, as I didn't think the Japanese girl skated nearly well enough in her short program to be where she was going into the long.

86. She skated the same program at the U.S. nationals without falling, and
...it was spectacular. I was hoping she could repeat that at the Olympics, but something went wrong with her jumps on Thursday.

71. I figured out what Sasha's problem was
I mean, really, all she had to do was stay vertical for four flippin' minutes. Criminetly!

Then again, she apparently idolizes this man:

so I guess this

was inevitable.

87. Oh please, will ya'll quit with the hating on Sasha Cohen..
I personally don't give a rats ass what her political affiliations are.

Bottom line she skated magnificiently in the SP and rightfully got first place from the judges. She has said she thought the silver medal was a gift. Granted, she let herself down in the LP, but I'd love to see any of you "once every four years" fans of figure skating even attempt some of the jumps, spins and transitional moves that Ms. Cohen does.

If you want to blame anyone, blame the f**king judges from the ISU. Sasha made it very clear to Bob Costas last night that she's making no excuses for her performance. After all, it is only four minutes out of her entire life.

Figure skating is a subjective sport and always has been. It's not gonna change anytime soon. The ISU (International Skating Union) needs to clean house big time starting with their President Ottavio Cinquanta and the still corrupt judges and their national federations. Nothing's changed since 2002 and SLC. They've just covered their tracks more efficiently since no one has any idea what judge gave what score.

BTW, Shizuka Arakawa deserved her gold medal. She skated beautifully in both the SP and LP and she won the World Championship at Dortmund, Germany in 2004. So Shiz, didn't just appear on the world stage of FS. She's been a top competitor for both Irina Slutskaya and Sasha Cohen for quite awhile..

90. I have no idea who that person pictured in your post is
and frankly I don't give a damn.

I'm not defending Ms. Cohen's choices politically, if she's a Bushbot, she's in the same misguided group along with a awful lot of supposed "icons" of American sport.

Ernie Banks comes to mind. "Mr. Cub" who made life bearable for Cubs fans in the 1960's is a registered Puke as is "Da Coach" Mike Dikta. What about Lynn Swann running as a Puke for governor of PA or Roger Staubach who went hunting with "Dickless Cheney" over the weekend?

I guess that because these individuals, choose to vote and support the Republican party I'm supposed to think they're worthless? I don't think that, granted to a person have forgotten "where they came from", but to a person, they were all great atheletes and deserve some respect for that alone....:banghead:
