Having a bad, world induced, depression day DU
Really feel like I'm on the edge of all reason today and just sitting here feeling hopeless about everything. Someone make me laugh or give me hope.

5. Thanks jack
I do have a lot of positives in my life. It's the things I can't control that drive me nuts. I'm depressed by nature (or biochemistry anyway) these things just hit me out of the blue. thanks for responding though. All I really needed.

24. Speaking of biochemistry, sugar and bad diet play a HUGE
role in causing depression and anxiety. You can change your chemistry by changing your diet. A diet rich in raw fruits and veggies with most foods being eaten closest to its natural state, steamed lightly sauteed etc... can change your moods. I can attest to this. Since I've changed my diet I now have many moments of feelings of euphoria. It is so amazing. I just feel happy all the time and it didn't used to be this way. Sugar is the worse offender, white pasta and breads, empty calories, soft drinks etc... all bad for mood.

8. Think of MLK jr and don't give up. We have to understand that
we are fighting a huge corrupt monster and we will lose many battles that will sink us mentally. But, we must go on. Put one foot in front of the other and keep busy. It helps.

16. "Voices of a People's History of the United States"

Inspiring and empowering speeches by common Americans, per Howard Zinn on Democracy Now:

Monday, February 20th, 2006
Readings From Howard Zinn's "Voices of a People's History of the United States"
http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=06/02/20/148251
(real audio, real video)

Today we spend the hour with readings from a Voices of a People's History of the United States edited by historian Howard Zinn and Anthony Arnove. It is the companion volume to Zinn’s legendary People’s History of the United States – which has sold over a million copies.

We will hear dramatic readings of speeches, letters, poems, songs, petitions, and manifestos. These are the voices of people throughout U.S. history who struggled against slavery, racism, and war, against oppression and exploitation, and who articulated a vision for a better world.

Performances include Danny Glover as Frederick Douglass, Marisa Tomei as Cindy Sheehan, Floyd Red Crow Westerman as Tecumseh and Chief Joseph, Sandra Oh as Emma Goldman and Yuri Kochiyama, and Viggo Mortensen as Bartolomeo de Las Casas and Mark Twain.

17. Yesterday my therapist told me to "Steer into the skid" --
Edited on Fri Feb-24-06 07:44 AM by IndyOp
The worst part is the fear 'of the fear of being hopeless' - I know rationally that I won't be helpless, but I can worry incessantly about the dollar collapsing, losing my job, not being able to sell the house to get money to live, and what if there is another 9/11...

I am more afraid of the fear of these events than I would be of the events themselves. So, instead of distracting myself from the fear, I just go sit in a comfy chair and feel the fear - then it goes away for a good little while. (Gotta be careful to feel the fear and not 'stoke the fear' by letting the 'what if' scenarios run wild in your head!)

I also sometimes use a meditation "All shall be well. All shall be well. All manner of thing shall be well." I think of something I am afraid of then say the phrases to myself. Then think of something else I am afraid of then say the phrase again. Again, this lets me feel the fear and then feel the relief that I am not solely responsible for fixing 'the problem'. Repeat over and over until the state of fear lifts.

Finally, play with imagining a great future. I do gratitude lists for what I have now, but often have trouble thinking of anything in the future that I am looking forward to (I get so wound up in just 'dealing' with today that I can't of 'tomorrow'). So imagine a future that is comfortable and joyful. Imagine volunteering at the new universal health care center in a low-income neighborhood at which parents and kids and the elderly have warm relationships with the doctors and nurses and no one is worried about the cost. Imagine real security in the US after a bold new foreign policy turns all nations of the world into our brothers and sisters. Imagine pure air and water. Imagine a nation and world where we really put people first and everyone can feel secure.

21. Good advice obviously Indy
and thank you. And I know this. In my beliefs magick and the power of positive thinking are realities. It still sometimes feels as useless as prayer did when I was a christian. I feel helpless in the mundane world not the spiritual one. The world my family and friends inhabit. The world my wife has trusted me to protect and provide for her in and I feel I can do neither very well due to forces way beyond my control.
