They are the spirit of Nature's resiliancy. Got 16 in the basement and 5 in the yard.

9. Wow! What part of the country? |
|
They are no longer very common here 45 miles NW of Chicago. When I was a child we had all sorts of them in the ponds and woods and streams.
Now all of my ponds and woods and streams are 450,000 poorly-built townhomes and shopping malls. They even tore down the huge hill we used to play King of the Hill on.

10. These are captive bred. |

I breed Gulf Coast Box turtles.(Yeah, that's right!) They get much bigger than your average Eastern Box, up to 8 1/2" and have some cool color phases, some are black, some horn, and rarely a male will have an ivory white head. We've still got a pretty decent local(Eastern) population around here, I find a baby or 2 a year, but the bursting of the housing bubble might be the only thing that saves them.
I feel for you, I grew up in Baltimore and ALL of my old spots are gone.
