18. Pretzels originated with/for Lent.

During Lent, people couldn't eat eggs (among other things). Pretzels didn't have eggs in them, so they were a tasty treat that folks could eat, and the shape of the pretzel resembled the shape of someone in prayer. (I'm not making this up; I learned this today.)
