24. Probably moved because of the way it was posted....
Breaking news is supposed to be the actual headline from a news source put in the subject line, per posting rules over there. I posted it as a news story just now...

54. Thelma Lou.....
..before there was a Tikki there was a sweet ole girl (dawgie) named Thelma Lou....

Sometime when Mayberry was on TV... Don Knotts (Barney) would call out
for his Thelma Lou and our girl would waddle over to the tv screen and look up...
and we would all laugh.

Goodbye Don....someone who through a career of a lifetime made us smile and laugh.

Andy and Barney were lawmen
Tough as leather they were
Warned every crook in the record book
To stay away from mayberry
Oh yes they were the law
And they didn't know fear

31. sad & scarier for those of us who become the "oldest" generation
Edited on Sat Feb-25-06 05:59 PM by HereSince1628
in our families.

Watching grandparents and great aunts and uncles die in the 60's and 70's seemed so remote. There is your parent's generation standing between you and death...and then after another 20-30 or so years...there is no one standing between you and the event. YOU are in charge of making funeral arrangements...buying caskets and memorials, YOU must deal with the estate... and most importantly YOU must deal with the notion that the next pulse is going to include your brothers and sisters and even YOU!

Waiting out OUR twenty-thirty years seems so short...

So, Cheers to a Good Life for Don, a life that brought pleasure to so many! Bring me another BEER before I take this too seriously.

33. I posted a Don Knotts poll on DU on Valentine's Day...
...asking DUers to select a date for Barney Fife: Thelma Lou, Juanita over at the Diner, or "Other"...

So I'll let that one stand as my memorial tribute. His work on The Andy Griffith show was, and will remain, the best.

Edited on Sat Feb-25-06 06:20 PM by theophilus
My favorite Barney episode was when he bought his "new car" from that sweet little old lady. Things are not always what they seem, eh Barn?

Best running gag......the one bullet.

Best physical comedy......when he and Thelma Lou were smooching in the courthouse because he had been thrown out of his room for cooking. His hair was a mess and he had lipstick all over and acted like nothing was going on when Andy and Opie caught them.

Favorite line.....talking to Thelma Lou in the cave about bats getting in her hair and laying eggs and her going crazy!

So many memorable moments. I wish he would have stayed with the series as long as Andy did.

The Incredible Mr. Limpet brings back pleasant memories, too. "I wish, I wish, I wish I were a fish."

Edited for stupid spelling....

The one when he was trying to convince Andy to go away on vacation. Told him he should go to Raleigh and get a room at the Y. Then, he should put on his blue suit, put a Windsor knot in his "stri-ped" tie and go out to "one of them 'Rabbit Clubs'".
