1. Try Klipsch speakers.
http://www.klipsch.com

They have some computer speakers under $300. My cousin had a pair for his computers and they were mindblowing.

3. As far as I know, Klipsch speakers won't tear the roof off.
However, the audio clarity and quality is amazing. You'll practically be able to hear the musicians breathing. I'm not sure what model my cousin had, but I imagine all of their products are along similar lines of quality.

5. Those might work, though the second one might be too big.
I went back to their website and found what I think my cousin had. If it's not the exact same model, it's very close and did work perfectly with his desktop PC.

6. Logitech makes some phenomenal speakers, as does Klipsch
I have a set of the older Logitech Z-6800 (I think that's the model) that are awesome. They've sense been replaced with a model that has wireless rear speakers in a surround sound setup. . . very cool.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Brand=1080&N=2010370060+50001080&Submit=ENE&Manufactory=1080&SubCategory=60

Klipsch makes some great stuff as well (although with the Logitech, you also get a built in dolby and dts decoder so you can pretty much use the thing as a low end home theater setup as well).

The Klipsch Promedia sound a bit better as far as outright audio quality goes:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Brand=1390&N=2010370060+50001390&Submit=ENE&Manufactory=1390&SubCategory=60

Overall, Logitech gives you great sound and more versatility, Klipsch gives you better audio clarity for music and such.

Or that's my opinion anyway.

7. Logitech has such a wide range of quality does it not?
That is the only reason I was nervous about the logitechsThe X-530s are good then?

a few notches.

The higher end Logitech stuff is fantastic, the lower end stuff is pretty average. In that price range I'd be more likely to go with the Klipsch.

I haven't actually HEARD that particular set, so I can't guarantee the quality :)

That soooo pisses me off.I saw an mp3 player the shipping costs was 30.00 and a 29.99 mandatory "insurance" fee.

8. Bose and Tivoli Audio
Bose makes a couple of nice PC speakers. Also, Tivoli Audio Model Two (with am/fm radio) coupled with the subwoofer are excellent quality. I use the Tivoli at work and use the Bose on one of my systems at home (they're also great for portability - I take them on trips to Cape Cod and hook them up to a small portable radio).

Saw a way-cool Harman Kardon Soundsticks II at work (list $250, $150 at buy.com).

10. Hi Wain.Welcome to DU
I was looking at the harman soundsticks on ebay. They looked kind cool. They are clear.I will have to check out the Tivoli. My daughter would love a set for her mp3 player.Do you have a model number for them?I am somewhat nervous about the bose.My nephew works for Bose he told me they are overpriced for the quality (one of the few items that Bose makes that does not live up to the name)

The Bose model is Companion 2 (list at $99). It does not have a subwoofer, but the sound stage and base are very good. Bose has another model with subwoofer listing at $250 which is too expensive. (Hope this link to circuit city works)

The Tivoli model is "Model Two"! Here's a corrected link to Audio Advisor.

21. Never give money to Bose
You can get better quality for less money elsewhere. The money that other companies spend on actually designing and building a better product, Bose spends on fancy marketing campaigns designed to convince the public that their products are better than they really are.

11. Logitech Speaker System - Z3I $99 at Target
I bought min about 6 months ago kick ass for not a lot of money.

• 40 watts total power (2x8.5 watts + 23)
• Satellites have 2" aluminum phase plug driver
• Subwoofer has an 8" pressure driver
• Made of brushed aluminum
• Removable grills and durable cast metal stands

With their brushed aluminum face and ebony styling, this Logitech speaker system will dress up any workspace. The 2-phase plug satellite speakers with brushed aluminum grills and durable cast metal stands have 2" aluminum phase plug drivers, and each deliver 8.5 watts of power. The subwoofer's 8" pressure driver delivers full, rich bass, 23 watts, and is equipped with its own volume control. . . .

I have never seen them on "sale" so I'm sure the price is right.

Nice find. I buy auto stuff on EBAY, electronics I usually buy Target Staples or Comp USA in case of defective out of the box.

PS:

His $20 shipping cost is nuts.
