2. I have never managed to take a good pic of the local owls.
But we have quite a few around here.
At least once a year, they FILL the trees on our street
and spend all night hooting back and forth.
It's pretty amazing to hear.

24. Nah, I'm usually awake all night anyway. And I love to hear them.

The first time I witnessed the 'owl convention',
it was about 4:00 am. I ran in the house and woke up
my sweetie, got her dressed and dragged her outside.
She was glad I did it (eventually, lol).

I assume the owls are conducting some sort of mating ritual.
They stake out different trees and call back and forth,
and every so often one will fly over to another owl's tree.

I just feel privledged to see this stuff,
especially since I live in town these days.
I grew up in the sticks, and I never saw no Owl Conventions there.

26. Something else to show your sweetie is ice on thin tree branches,
when there is a light in the background (above, usually). If there are a lot of thin branches with ice on them and a light source behind, it makes many concentric circles; looks like the branches are circular ...

3. My sister and her fiance rescued this one.
They were on one of those unplanned road trips folks without kids can take, and found the poor thing stuck in a fence. It had probably been there since the night before - they found it in the afternoon. Drove 70 or 80 miles with it between her feet to the rescue intake in Tucson. They later got word that it would be fine, broken wing but no infection.

You can just barely see the fence wires here.

On the floor of front passenger seat.

4. Wish I had a scanner so I could show you all the scratch board owl
DUer Luna_Chick drew for me. She knows owls and I have a mutual affinity.

There was a great horned owl at Sabino Canyon who used to 'walk' with me most evenings. I would take a path less followed at night and the great bird would stay close, lighting on saguaros along my path. Figured he was hoping I would flush some rodents for his dining pleasure, but never once saw him go for a kill. He was great company at a time in my life that I needed it.

17. I've only seen a few
in person, just out and about in the wild.

One time, some friends and I got a little lifted off the ganja and we went driving through all these back roads at like 1 a.m. So we were coming around this bend and in the middle of the road sat this brown owl. It was so cool seeing it! :bounce:
Luckily, we were going slow because we were looking for wild life in the first place! :)

:hi: Joan!

21. You're welcome! I LOVE cats, but there have been many cat
threads, and some dog threads. Owls are never mentioned, so I thought I would see if there were any other owl people here ... there seem to be a few of us ...

18. Sweet story
There was one in the paper not too long ago about a squirrel and small dog that became friends. Again it was right as the dog was preparing to give birth. I guess there is a "hormonal window" there ...

38. I actually saw the story on TV first....
It is an amazing site, the dog feed her pups, with the Owl at her side. I love cats, dogs, owls, mir cats and penguins too. (The penguins that live on the Cape Town coast, because they swim with people and steal sunbathers clothes. The are not fundie penguins, they are naughty penguins!)

They've named the owls "Hal" and "Alice". I know Hal's been living in the back yard for several months, but this is the first I've heard of "Alice"...
