When someone asks for information and the first several replies are along the lines of "You might want to try this new site called Google."
I mean, is it just possible that someone might be posting a question on DU with the intent of getting feedback from an actual person? Or perhaps to elicit discussion, rather than just leaping to the first page that Google coughs up?
I'm not talking about someone who asks for info when a particular word or phrase is obscure--Google's great for that kind of search--but when someone comes here to ask, maybe it's not just laziness that motivates them?
Damn, I hate that.

1. LOL! I've noticed that sometimes. I think it's pretty rude. |
|
When I ask a question it's probably because I want personal perspectives or an "in your own words" response. I'm a big time Googler (it's my home page), but sometimes I don't feel like wading through all the crap that a search can return. So in a way it is laziness, but geez. If someone doesn't feel like answering they don't have to. It probably takes as much time to steer someone to Google as it does to just answer the question in the first place.

2. And sometimes, people might not even know what to Google |

That's me when it comes to tech. Thanks to the folks here for suggesting TinyPic free image hosting - which is not the first thing that comes up when you Google "image hosting" (which I didn't even know the app was called!) Sometimes it's just nice to have someone give you a link that worked well for them.

Really DUMB questions that could be found out in less than ten seconds.
When did the Challenger explode?
google - challenger explosion = answer
who is the head of NASA?
google - head of NASA = answer
It's intellectually ( or just plain ) laziness that typically results in those replies, as simply GOING TO GOOGLE and finding out yourself is actually easier and quicker than asking DU.

7. You know what I hate worse? When someone asks a question and |

several people answer him/her and he/she gets upset and replies with, "I know THAT, that's not what I was asking..." and gets generally pissy about a non descript question they started out with. :hi:

I've seen that, and avoided asking some questions for exactly that reason.
It would be nice to get people's opinions, perspectives and feedback instead of just a bunch of links.

since I do make a difference between a 'personal question needing personal answers' and just plain general stuff like what DS1 pointed out. Google (or any other search engine which is by default built in in every known browser this day) might be way quicker to provide you with the answer. And if someone is just too lazy to go further than the first page of what Google (as example) comes up, and expects others to waste their time because their nice, well.
This does not apply to, as I said, personal questions needing a personal answer. Google can't help you with questions like 'How did you feel when you had your first wisdom teeth pulled' (although you might get some blog-entries on that.) But if it's something Google can help you, try there first ...
