Need help broadcasting AM or FM short range (1/8 mile radius)

I'm looking for ideas or places on the web to purchase an AM or FM transmitter capable of transmitting in a 1/8 to 1/4 mile radius max. It needs to be portable or battery operated and have the ability to change the channels because it will be used in different locations.

Similar to the things real estate people use for talking houses, but portable and preferably something the FCC Men In Black won't be knocking on my door about.

Any ideas, thoughts?
