2. Yep
OpenOffice is really good. A lot better than paying hundreds of dollars for MS Office.

3. I totally concur
it's dead easy to use and I kept pinching myself when I started using it because it was FREE. OpenOffice is the best value ever and it works and it's FREE, did I mention it was FREE?

You can even save documents in PDF format, this is handy when it comes to other people reading your stuff because everybody has adobe acrobat.

5. Wow - this thing is FREE?? But does it.....
preform like MS "Works" and "Word" with spreadsheets and all????? Will it work also with FireFox?? I absolutely REFUSE to use IE or Netscape either one. Please let me know. I would like to get rid of anything and everything MS that I possibly could.

Now that we are on the issue of software, etc, does anyone know what to replace Windows itself with??? I want STABILITY, NO SPYING, STABILITY, and did I mention no spying ability??

10. It does everything ... it really is terrific!
WRITER is the word processor

CALC is the spreadsheet

IMPRESS is to create multimedia presentations

DRAW will produce everything from simple diagrams to dynamic 3D illustrations and special effects.

BASE enables you to manipulate database data seamlessly within OpenOffice.org.

It's so good, you won't believe it's free, LOL! :-)

6. OpenOffice is good and getting better.
As an added bonus OpenOffice can also write pdf files.

But OpenOffice is big and it can be slow on older computers.

A smaller, faster free word processor is AbiWord: http://www.abisource.com

It's not as capable as OpenOffice, especially with Microsoft formatted documents, but it works fine for simple writing chores.

11. That was a great question,
and a very good answer. I'm bookmarked that site to check out later. It would be nice to give less money to Microsoft.

I have also decided, based on another thread, that it's time to check out Foxfire as an alternative to IE.
