Well, after work I'm picking up my first pair of 'full time' glasses...
Edited on Fri Mar-17-06 04:26 PM by Richardo
...I lasted 49 1/2 years without them.

My distance vision is still around 20/20, but I've been on reading glasses for about 5 years now and have probably lost or destroyed enough pairs to rival Elton John's collection. (That's why I've been reduced to buying them at the Dollar Store.)

Anyway, the new prescription glasses are Progressive lenses (what else for a good liberal?) and people tell me they will take some getting used to. So starting tonight, I guess I'll be looking around like a cat: doing the 'full head swivel' instead of just moving my eyes.

I'll let you know how it's going on Monday... :hi:

1. Good luck!
I've been wearing glasses full-time since I was 20. Given heredity, I'll be in bifocals before I'm 40.

2. I didn't need glasses until I was about 16.
I went to an eye doctor not expecting anything other than "you're fine" and got a prescription for glasses. It was (and still is) a relatively weak prescription, but I need them to see anything at a distance.

Good luck man. All the geniuses have glasses. ;) :hi:

:pals:

It'll be weird looking through the lenses, and not over the top of the rims anymore. I'm sure that was adding a hefty dose of geezerosity to my appearance.

6. Me too (`16) - good luck Richardo
I am at a stage where I have to take my mild distance glasses off to read - don't quite need reading glasses yet but will if I ever put my contacts back in - :(

7. I've been wearing glasses since I was 11, but now...
I'm going to need bifocals.

It's as if my eyes read the textbook or something - I'm facing 40 this year, and all of a sudden, the fine print is too fine. I've always been nearsighted, but now with my glasses on, I often have to hold small print further away. It's a strange feeling.

8. If I forget my reading glasses it looks like I'm playing the trombone...
...when I'm trying to focus on something to read. I'm looking forward to not doing that anymore.

(Thanks to Bing Crosby for the joke.)

I have to wear reading glasses now. I used to wear bifocals when I was in my 20s since I was looking at a computer screen all the time.

I also wore glasses from age 2 to age 18. So I have been on both sides of the aisle. ;)

Besides, glasses are cool now. Ironically.

12. Good luck
I've been wearing them since age 9. I'm pretty blind in my left eye. It's not so bad, really. :D

13. Can I be nosy and ask what they set you back?
I have to get a new pair, I'm wearing a pair from 1992 right now it's an emergency situation. The last pair I bought were close to 250.00, and now I'll have to get bifocals there's no way around it.
Curious thing I see better with these old ones, I can read without taking off my glasses, before if I wanted to read anything off came the specs.

14. Well I've got a vision plan at work ...
...but as I recall the frames are $129 and the progressive lenses (no anti-glare coating, plastic not polycarbonate) are $180. My co-pay was $10 for the exam.

Out of pocket: $119.

15. The lenses is where they get you
I like glass, I've tried plastic and hated it. Now it's line or no line bifocal, nolines costs more so lines will do just fine.

17. I've had both
If you work with a computer, no lines are infinitely better.

16. I think it'll depend on where you are.
I wear no line bifocals, will be getting a new pair tomorrow with transition lenses and the cost (new frames AND lenses...no deals, no coupons and no insurance) will be $260.
