I don't have a scanner

Edited to add: Ancesters from 1917? No, those would be my Grandparents.

4. That consideration would never come up.
Homesteaders on the prairie were much more likely to
welcomb you into their home.

:hi:

7. That's an interesting observation.
The gentleman on crutches was a judge,
The man with the wide brimmed hat spawned a legendary horseman,
The homesteader on your right is the spitting image of
my father, his son, and me, his son's son.

Actually, that photo's from 1914, but this one below is a picture he took in 1917, on the battlefield, of a demolished railway bridge:

11. Have you seen these FULL COLOR photos of Pre-WWI Russia?
This guy named Prokudin-Gorskii developed a technique similar to technicolor for taking color slides. Now, with modern computers, the glass negatives he took can be scanned into a computer and a digital image can be obtained. The result: full color images of the Russian Empire between 1905 and 1912. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prokudin-Gorskii )

A self-portrait of Sergei Prokudin-Gorskii in 1915

The Library of Congress owns most of the photos now, and they put several on exhibit a few years back. There are nearly 2000 prints in their possession. The "pictures" in this form look like this:

Out of those, 122 were selected for full remastering; these 122 were cropped, and digitally restored. Out of those, about 50 or 60 were then put on exhibit:

Here are three links. The first is a link for the Library of Congress exhibit "The Empire That Was Russia" (about 60 pictures):
http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/empire/work.html

The second features those 60, plus others that were prepared but weren't exhibited: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/p?pp/prok:@band(color+rendering)

And finally, there's the entire collection. Some of these aren't in as great a condition, but they're still pretty remarkable:
http://lcweb2.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/p?pp/prok:@field(CALL+p87)::SortBy=CALL

Aren't these great? Maybe you're already familiar with them. I posted a thread about them in the Lounge a couple months back. Enjoy!
