`Brokeback' to hit DVD while still in theaters
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Those who have yet to see "Brokeback Mountain," or those looking to see it again, will soon have a choice -- the DVD will hit stores April 4, even with the film still in theatrical release.

That's a rare overlap, said a spokeswoman for DVD distributor Universal Studios Home Entertainment. But, she explained, with the film still riding high on its eight Academy Award nominations and three Oscar wins, its theater run has been extended, bumping into the scheduled DVD release.

1. Good move on their part
get it out on DVD while the Oscar buzz is still high. People who wouldnt go to see it in theaters anyway will want to rent it on DVD.

3. To some people
going to see this movie would be like being spotted in a gay bar.

5. Had an interesting encounter at Blockbuster on Friday.
I went to pick-up a couple of movies for the weekend and the man in front of me with his wife was jibber-jabbing about something, when he exclaims:

"You know, like what they say in 'Brokeback Mountain':'I wish I could quit you!' Yah. I haven't seen the movie. I'll see it when it comes out on DVD. I'm surrounded by gays all day long, so no need to see it at the movie theater. Ya know, I don't think anything for or against gays. They should be allowed to be as miserable as we are."

Didn't know what to think after I left, especially because he kept looking over at me while talking, trying to gauge my reaction. I tried not to over analyze this exchange and just let it be. I normally could care less as long as someone isn't overtly bashing my peeps. At least he's going to see the movie.

8. I think he was afraid that being in a dark movie theater
with all those gays would give him an opportunity to live out his deepest, darkest desires.

"Brokeback" is a must have DVD. I'll head over to amazon.com that day and buy it.

7. I wish they'd do that with Good Night and Good Luck
I wanted to see that in the theatre but I couldn't find anyone within a reasonable distance playing it.

10. Wasn't "Walk the Line" out on DVD while still in the theater?
IIRC, it was. This does seem like it's getting more common; at the least, the DVD seems to be out immediately after the movie leaves the theaters.

11. DVD extras:
(from Amazon.com)

On Being A Cowboy
Directing From the Heart: Ang Lee
From Script to Screen: Interviews with Larry McMurtry & Diana Ossana
Sharing the Story: The Making of Brokeback Mountain

No commentary listed, which is a little odd (although I don't know if Ang Lee has done them for previous films).

It's out in the UK on April 24th with the same extras.
