Any ideas for a good birthday present for a five year old boy?
He's got clothes coming out his ears. He prefers toys that work large motor skills to things that require precise or detailed movements. He can read well but does not write.

Any ideas?

7. A magazine subscription.
I gave my daughter one at Christmas time and she loves it. She receives it in the mail every other month. I leave it in the mailbox and let her take it out. She sits down and looks through every last page of the magazine.

This is the magazine she receives:

It's called Click and it's written for ages 3-7 as an intro to science and the world around them.

(BTW-she's a five year old so it might work well for him too)

8. Legos are always good. K'nex, too.
Puzzles. Tinker toys.

Play-doh!!! Play-doh's GREAT (when it's for someone else's kid) and I haven't met a kid yet who doesn't love the stuff.

Oh. And it's not gonna break the bank, either.

9. What are his interests?
What works for one kid might not work for another. My elder son got his own TV show for his third birthday, loved the public access classes, and had a great time playing onstage. Another kid might find the whole thing boring.

10. Let's see
He loves computers, animals, rides in his bike trailer, the powerpuff girls, star wars, sports, sharks, and a lot of things I'm forgetting.

12. Legos has those Bionicle thingies
When they're put together, they look like some kind of Star Wars space creature or something. My boys have liked those things from the time they were really little...and I STILL get one for each of them for Christmas. The oldest is 22 now and still looks for his.

11. How bad do you want to piss off his parents?
If his parents are cool: Lincoln Logs

If his parents could use a little comeuppance: drums are always good

15. Drum set.
Sure, it's noisy, BUT, motor skills, talent, pissing off LeftyDad...all good things to take part in.

YES, dammit...I got my first drum set when I was this age. My mom, to this date, regrets it.

16. There's no way it'd go to his Dad's house- he never has him over
and my Dad works nights, so loud indoor toys would be a problem here. He is really musical (he DOES NOT get that from me, I can sing a bit but lack the coordination for an instrument) but anything louder than his ocarina wouldn't really do well here.

17. I don't think Tinker Toys has been mentioned

The Old Farmer's Almanac calls them a toy that has stood the test of time.

19. That was going to be my suggestion too.
Tinker Toys come in the traditional size and a larger size too, for little hands.
