1. Hong Kong definitely has the best skyline

But it's better when you see it from Kowloon rather than from Victoria Peak. The view with the mountain in the background is absolutely stunning.

As a former Frankfurter, I can't help it: The idea that Frankfurt is a major city with a skyline is a fancy of Frankfurters. Nobody anywhere else considers Frankfurt a city, nor those ten tiny pillars (three of them good) a skyline.

3. Hong Kong may be pretty in pictures, but it's absolutely awful in person.

It's hot, crowded, humid, dirty, old, crowded, dingy, noisy, crowded, expensive and crowded. At ground level it is not nearly as glamorous as it is in postcard pictures. Many cars there use diesel fuel and the air smells bad. There is a constantly moving sea of humanity going in all directions, all around the clock, like a gigantic ant farm. The food is very good, but you will not want to spend more than a couple of hours in Hong Kong.

4. I don't know. I enjoy HK tremendously.

But then again, I was there with ex-pat friends who live there and that made a big difference. I spent a great deal of time at the HK Football Club and that was my saving grace from a financial standpoint because my friends merely "put it on their tab" everytime we went there and refused all money from me. Lovely time. The club was excellent and in Happy Valley - right in the middle of things. It's kind of what I imagine it would be like to own your own little Central Park in HK and put a pub and a rugby pitch on it.

Having said all of that, I definitely found Thailand to be much more interesting than HK.

5. I thought Bangkok was interesting, but no skyline to speak of

The temple complexes were awesome.

I found Hong Kong to be quaint and classic, not dirty. Beijing was pretty dirty. Guangzhou was really dirty.

In Hong Kong, a trip to Stanley Market was not at all dirty. I also stayed at a monastery up the hill from the Shatin racetrack. Positively solitary, with a tiny chapel and silence. The Hakka traditional house and the Buddhist temples - not crawling with people. Trip to Victoria Peak - not crawling with people. Streets of Kowloon are more conducive to a walkabout than those on Hong Kong island, in my opinion.

I'd still take the skyline of Hong Kong over the other cities mentioned at any time.

13. What's wrong with you?

It's crowded, sure. But the buildings were interesting and the people were unfailingly polite, kind and helpful. People actually cared about their city.

You want bad air? Go to Bangkock. Now, that's bad air!

7. I was surprise that London wasn't on the list

because they have built some beautiful buildings there since I was in London 13 years ago. So I would say London is my first choice, but my favorite for all sentimental reasons is Toronto. Of those on your list above, I would say Shanghai because the buildings are nicely futuristic, and as an SF fan, it's how I can envision a huge city during this century and beyond. The others have a lot of nice buildings, but while I love NYC, among others, it's gotten too crowded and nothing stands out like it should.

And for another one missing from the list, my hometown of Boston has a pretty impressive skyline as well. :)

It's dirty and ugly.... but has some of the best architecture ever. I go every year and I'm always amazed.

8. Hong Kong, but NYC is the best city of all times, anywhere on earth, ever.

So there's that. And after Hong Kong, I think it's the pertiest.

I died just a little bit looking at that picture of the NYC skyline without the Twin Towers. :cry: And, I do think that a lovelier NYC skyline pic could have been chosen.

16. Shanghai only shows one side of the river

The other side from the PuDong district (pictured there, which was farmland 15-20 years ago) is the famous Bund, which has a row of immaculate 1920s-1930s NY style buildings, and also a massive set of skyscrapers in and of itself.
