Princess Mononoke

This movie is just amazing.

I've started watching some anime with my son. The visuals are stunning and I love the fantasy story lines.

So far I've watched Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke. I'm not really familar with this genre, can someone recommend other movies like these?

1. All the Miyazaki films are great...he's made a few others not on your list

...that's coming from a friend of mine who loves anime.

I'm not too much of a fan so I can't recommend any--I've just now seen Spirited Away (which I liked) and some of Princess Mononoke (which I found somewhat dull, after Spirited Away, and badly voiceovered). I may catch Howl's Moving Castle tonight (I think?) on Cartoon Network but alas, the Kid's Choice Awards is on tonight and I think I have to watch them.

Totoro is one of my favorite movies ever.

The older version has much better dubbing but doesn't come with Japanese. I usually watch the Japanese version with subtitles.

I think he also did Pom Poko, though they won't be showing that one to American youngsters anytime soon. Most of the characters are tanuki raccoon spirits and, true to Japanese tradition, are depicted as having scrota that hang down halfway to their knees.

Spirited Away is far and away the best flick Studio Ghibli has produced to date. It's also the only one I've seen where they did even a halfway decent job on the English voice track, mainly because John Lasseter was still working for Disney at the time. It was Lasseter's idea to bring Spirited Away to international audiences. He got out of there not long after, taking what was left of their talent and artistic integrity with him, but Der Maus still has exclusive rights to the western release of all Miyazaki's films.

Howl's Moving Castle is Miyazaki's most recent movie, I believe; I saw it in my local revival place last summer. It was based on a Diana Wynne Jones novel. Be warned, Billy Crystal has a part in the English version.

9. Grave of the Fireflies is beautiful, but very sad...

One of the films were I bawled like a baby.

Millennium Actress is a little weird and hard to follow sometimes, but it's genius at what it is. I think you would like both.

the visuals were stunning, and it had that futuristic feel to it ( which I like a lot ). Friends of mine watch loads of anime and go to conventions and shit like that, but I don't know enough about it to participate, so I don't bother...and did I mention that I'm really bad with run-on sentences?

If he's a mid-to late teenager, go ahead and do Trigun. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is also awesome, and has some very cool political intrigue as well as action.

My Neighbor Totoro was the first anime I ever saw, and I've been a hugh Miyazaki fan ever since.

While I don't know of any other movies your son might enjoy that would be appropriate for his age (my favorite genre being affectionatly known as "mind-fuck"), I know of a few series that he might like.

Try Fullmetal Alchemist (sub or dub), Naruto (sub only), or Bleach (sub only... it hasn't been dubbed yet).
