Poll question: Could you date a republican? |
|
Edited on Sun Apr-02-06 08:06 PM by Ava
I dumped a republican a few weeks ago. We had only been on a few dates, so I wouldn't say we were a couple. We got to talking about politics with some friends, and soon the discussion turned into an arguement. he called my website "stupid" and me an "idiot." needless to say, that was the last time i saw him. what's funny is a few days later he IM'd me to see if I wanted to go see a movie. Talk about an "idiot."
So, I'm asking you all this question: Do you think you could date a republican?

I do want to get laid but I don't let ideology affect me like that anymore, if the girl respects me despite our disagreements on politics and have coinciding interests in other ways then I wouldn't let something like political ideology get to me.

it was okay. It was fun arguing with her on stuff...and then we'd make-up (in more ways then one...).
But then I got sick of it and dumped her.
I don't think I'll date another Republican woman again. I have enough stress in my life as it is.

But right now, I don't know if I could. There are plenty of people out there who are not raging neo-cons but still consider themselves republicans - still, it would be hard for me to have any respect for someone who could vote for bushco. Times are too volatile.

7. Being a Republican indicates a mindset, and more than just politics. |
|
I could never seriously date or fall in love with someone who aligned themselves with George W. Bush, of all people. But I find that the way someone is politically is usually a good indicator of a number of things about them.
I know and like a few Republicans, I respect two or three very deeply. But to share my life with one? Don't think it would work.

But he was more of the old-school type Republican. I didn't agree with him on a number of things but I didn't think he was actually batshit crazy. He did, however, eventually two-time on me, proving himself to be a duplicitous bastard in other ways. But in the last 20 years, since Mr. Preppy Republican Dickwad cheated on me, so many Republicans have mutated into truly horrible, demented creatures. I can barely even talk to them now, can't imagine dating one.

After the last breakup I decided I really was insistent on holding out for a close ideological match (more for other stuff, honestly with politics it was just assumed.) As a result, I have no interest in righties, centrists, DLC dems and a whole lot of people who piss me off for other reasons.

Of course I'm married, but If I wasn't there is no way. I'm too verbal, too intense, too informed, and too involved. But I have friends--a republican and a Liberal independant, who get along well. They've been married a long time. I give the rebublican shit all the time. When push comes to shove, I find that many of his "values" are more in line with a social liberal and fiscal conservative (He's a tax specialist)stance than what I would consider an actual republican at this point. HOWEVER....he voted for that asshole bush and I will never forgive or let him forget, epecially since he's now regretting it. We have a long-standing political feud.

Oops.
Seriously, tho, I have gone out with a Republican, but it wasn't in a heavy relationship. I'd like to think I'm open minded enough to find what's good in anybody I was attracted to, even if I disagree with them. I think I'd have to be pretty conceited to think that someone wasn't worthy of dating me just because she held different opinions on public policy.
On the other hand, I haven't really field tested this theory.
(on edit: My exwife evolved into a Republican after we split up. I'm pretty sure if we'd stayed together I wouldn't be a Democrat today; you can't vote in prison)

I can't even get a crush on any of the Republican celebrties. I give celebrities the benefit of the doubt, but once I get a strong indication that they are a Repuke, the crush goes away. I do have some attraction to former VJ Kennedy - she happens to be fairly liberal socially, though conservative fiscally. For dating, any Bush or neo-con loving Repukes would be out completely. I feel too strongly here. The Republican would have to be not very partisan, anti-Iraq war, and more moderate than Snowe and Chafee. So, you can see how hard it would be for me to date a Republican.

I wasn't totally sure of her political affiliation right away, although I suspected that she might be Republican because she wasn't very... well, bright.
After a couple of dates she told me that she thought Bush was "a very nice man." I broke up with her later that week, although quite honestly she could have been the president of the Howard Dean fan club and I would have ended it.

Its their job to be obedient and subservient, right? You shouldn't be surprised that a Republican was such a condescending jerk and then asked you out again. He's probably used to women with no self respect who take that kind of treatment.
I couldn't have a serious relationship with a Republican, no. Most of them have an attitude that's fairly repulsive from the start, so even a fling with one is questionable.

If you can put up with any ONE of these or any COMBINATION thereof; then go for it.
I simply CAN'T imagine it.
The ONLY four reasons I can think of for a human to vote for *ush:
STUPID --Uninformed SCARED --Terror, Terror, Terror SELFISH --I've GOT MINE! SUPERSTITIOUS -- It's in GAWD's and DUBYA'S hands
No way could I sleep with a Repuke in this time of crisis. If they are still supporting this administration of death and destruction, I can barely be civil to them, let alone SLEEP with one of them.
Luckily, I'm married to a liberal guy!

Dated one way back in college (15 years ago--oof, I hadn't realized so much time had passed), but she cheated on me and we broke up. I'm kinda glad it didn't work out since she was Republican and a Southern Baptist and I'm an agnostic Democrat. She was also one of those people who thought--and I wish I were kidding--that poor people are poor because they want to be poor and didn't think they deserved help. Now, I've never read The Bible or anything, but I'm pretty sure that isn't what that Jesus guy said.
That said, I have a mad crush on someone I've been friends with for a while but I honestly don't know what her political leanings are.
