I've had the copper one for about 4 years and I love it! Best birth control in the world IMO!

34. it's excellent, isn't it? VERY unde-rated and under-utilized.
I didn't care much for the delivery process, but once it was done it's been problem free.

It's plastic and copper now, I believe.

18. No
I know this is a light-hearted thread and all, but your post makes me plea to all DU'ers to not forget our friends who do live there. Even $10 to Planned Parenthood will help a low-income woman get the peace of mind I can afford with my employer-provided medical insurance.

17. Long long time ago in another universe
I was riding with my gf in her car, and I picked up this round spongey thing with an elastic strap, "What's this' I asked.
"Oh, thats my diaphram" she said so nonchalatly that all I could say was Oh and put it back where I found it.

26. Nope - it's a longish story
Back in the 80's, the Dalkon Shield was introduced on the market. The Dalkon Shield's problems were twofold: a non-monofilament thread hung into the vaginal cavity, ready to wick up more readily vaginal flora best left in the vagina; and the design of the IUD itself, which was more prone to uterine wall perforation. After some awful deaths caused by use of the device were publicized, the company pulled the Dalkon Shield from the market, but the overall publicity was so bad that prescribing IUDs went out of fashion, and the IUD market tanked.

24. Any affects such as crampping?
Only asking cause a freind got one recently and whined like a baby about all the cramps. I didn't know whether to believe her or not since she is such a drama queen. She should have felt the cramps I had when I gave birth to my 10 lb daughter!

27. Only on the day itself
I was fine after a full night's sleep. If she's a drama queen, I'm sure she was milking it a bit, but I bet she did have cramps right after insertion.

I suppose you don't know that just yet, huh?

Keep us posted, I'd heard the same thing and it scared me away. I HATE cramps!!

35. I've never felt any additional to what I already had... and ibuprofin is
very effective on that stuff.

It's far, far better than screwing up your system with hormones.

29. Best wishes!
I got really, really crampy with the Copper one, but some people I know love it. Now, back on the pill (but getting sick of it- put on a little weight too :grr:) and I'm thinking of trying the Mirena one (a bit less hormones than the pill), but haven't gone for it yet.

30. Thanks!
I get my period right after it was placed, and I can tell right away that it's going to be heavier than normal. But I haven't had any extra cramps aside from the day itself. I've heard many good things about the Mirena one; I hope it works for you if that's what you choose :-)

31. A friend got Mirena a year ago.
After two babies in two years she was ready for something different from the usual pills.

She loves it-said she cramped for a couple of hours after insertion and hasn't looked back.

38. What's holding me back is...
potential for 3 months of sporadic spotting after. I should just go for it though. I'm so sick of the pill. Once I get through the brief spotting time, everything's reduced 80-90% supposedly.

40. She stated that she had a bit of spotting
but nothing bad. She said that it was small amounts and that a panty liner could easily handle it.

She really loves it and says that it was the best decision that she had made in a long time.
