I was raised by a Japanese mother, fed Japanese food my entire childhood (still can't eat certain meals without rice on the table), went to Japan several times during that time, and the first time I heard of or saw edamame was at a restaurant in my 20s. Go figure.

Costco sells big bags of frozen edamame, and the things have 29 grams of protein per cup!
Yummy!
