Hair color incident in schools (once again).
Lucky me-I opened up a link someone had sent me from yahoo the other day and read an incident about a girl being suspended for coloring her hair. Turns out the school in question is my former middle school. And the color in question was a few red streaks.

Here's the link from the local paper. I read one a few days ago on yahoo news and it has also been featured on our local news stations.

Just for the record: this policy has always been in place. They were sending girls home in the 80's w/ hair that was too heavily frosted. At that time, the girls were not allowed to return until the hair had been dyed a more natural color.

4. Then what did that make me?
When the passed their "no frosting" rule in the 80's I found ways around it.

I think I bought stock in peroxide and lemon juice until I went into high school.

13. I knew you were.
But the truth of the matter is that they probably did see me as a slut at that school.

I put in my time at Bueker. I know how they think.

5. Blue hair is natural colored in Springfield.
I guess red hair is not a natural color in Marshall, MO.

I got to do all sorts of crazy stuff with my hair! I love messing with my hair, and colouring it is part of all the fun for me. :D

over koolaid coloring.

The same school district would not allow a 4th grader to go back to school w/ purple hair a few years ago. She had used that aerosol spray temp color for Halloween. She tried to wash it out that night but it had tinged her pale blonde hair. She was sent home and informed that she couldn't go back until her hair was back to its natural color.

(edit: forgot the hair color originally)

10. From what I understood of the situation,
they took her to a beautician and had them fix the hair.

The school knew it would fade in a week or two. Big deal.

19. That's Marshall.
They can overlook the near epidemic levels of teen pregnancy there and the use of meth in the high school parking lot but dammit, they cannot overlook the fact that a few "freaks" might want different hair!

It's a mini Stepford.

9. I posted this one for a specific reason:
I've informed a few on here in the past about some of the idiotic things that my old small town did.

And I'm loving the fact that they aren't getting attention for their fantastic debate squad or for some of the wonderful students that do attend. Instead, they are blowing something silly way out of proportion.

I saw her pic. The streaks were few and small. And they weren't an outrageous color. And, from talking to a few friends in town there, she is an honor student.

Besides, I had your back on the last school thread.

I totally agree. If good kids are getting suspended for streaking their hair, it's time to relook at the school rules.

I know you had my back! I won't forget that! No worries! I watch out for my friends!

Want a bag?

And they don't care about the good kids there-they care about the well connected ones.

My best friend had an offer there and turned it down for that reason.

15. I wouldn't teach there, either.
I did one year at a private school where any kids that had any kids of academic needs (such as a bit of remedial work was asked to leave. And I was hired to develop a resource program for them! They just wanted to "fix" a kid in a week or two. They couldn't give two shits about children--- just mom and dad's money. :eyes:

P.S. You don't ever have to explain anything to me, such as why you started a post. Ever --- you got that? I got your back, babe!

22. They really were delusional yesterday!
They certainly did frighten me.

I'm a mother. If my child were 13 and they wanted consent to do an exercise of that nature I'd give it, as long as I knew that there was an appropriate amount of time at the end of the day to discuss what the nature truly was and how it made the students feel.

I would not sue and I wouldn't give my daughter advance notice. I would talk to her about it afterward and encourage her to read further into the subject.

I love the one that refused to read the above posts to understand why she was posting nothing but mott points in circular arguments. Too too funny.

But it does show that there are bad teachers out there. Look at the delusion we have right there, all in one thread. Maybe they all went to the same school!

33. My school did the blue/brown experiment.
From what I understand it's no longer allowed there. Of course, according to this article, hair dye is no longer allowed there either.

That thread was just f*cked up. I still don't understand the logic of most of the arguments!

26. That's incredible.
Of all the things schools have to think about these days, hair color is so far down the list that it's laughable. Thing is, I'm sure there are other places out there just like this.

31. Explains alot, doesn't it?
It seems strange that this is the only thing they focus on. That's probably why I had many problems when I went to school there-I was an expert by the age of 13 when it came to hair dye.

34. Yes it does.
A big problem with schools like this is that they drill this conformity into your head. They need to make these obedient little worker bees who do things without question. Then you get to college and a Psychology prof then wonders why we sit there and act like sponges and not critically thinking and questioning adults. I had that happen. Heck even a lot of college can be like the drone factory some people want high schools to be.

What a stifling environment for a kid. That type of repression is what I wish I had rebelled against. But there's still time for that.
