A new restaurant opened near work,it's Hispanic and expensive. I'd like to try something new or different.

1. Can you post the menu? |
|
It's hard to really say. Good Mexican food comes in all different styles, from greasy spoon fill-you-to-bursting-for-$5-Canadian to more upscale eateries. You mentioned that it was pricey. In that case, if it's good, it's probably focused on regional cuisine, rather than a melange of all that is Mexican/Latin American.

My nephew recommended it. I'd be at a loss to name anything other than stuff I've eaten at Tacotime.

4. Well, I'd stay away from the tacos, burritos, etc. |
|
If it's a pricey place, they're generally not worth it. Tacos are essentially Mexican deli fare; and usually taste best from a cheap, greasy hole-in-the-wall taqueria.
Get some pork (if you eat pork) in a tasty-sounding sauce -- there should be several colors, flavors, and heat levels available -- with rice, beans, and tortillas on the side. Or go for something made with masa harina: tamales are a safe bet (though they're also usually just as good, if not better, at the cheap places), or maybe a huarache.
I love Mexican food.

5. Doesn't have to be chocolate. |
|
There are many different molés, only some of which are chocolate-based (although the chocolate is the most common, and one of my favorites).
Dark meat chicken in a chocolate molé can be very good. If they offer turkey molé, you should try that, too -- turkey is the traditional fowl of choice for Oaxacan molé. :9

8. I don't know what hispanic food is, but Mexican food is fantastic. Depends |
|
on what they say their speciality is.
Ceviche is a wonderful appetizer. Guacamole should be fresh, not canned.
Soft tacos are far better than hard.
Burritos don't have to be massive.
Nachos are always a favorite as a meal or an appetizer.
Be brave about the salsas. If something has chipotle, try it, it is VERY hot and smokey.
Ranchero sauce isn't very good.
Enchiladas can be very tasty.
Fajitas are very gringo friendly.

10. Mexican food is one of my favorites. |
|
I love tamales, enchiladas, and chile relenos (don't know if I spelled that correctly). Fresh gaucamole is my absolute favorite. Pinto beans and rice. Oh, I love mexican food! My best friend when I was growing up was hispanic, her mom could cook - yum. Have a great meal.

14. If it's really Hispanic, order tapas or paella! |
|
SORRY for the snark. I do know what you mean.
Since the place is expensive, they may be serving what is called "Interior Mexican" food. Rick Bayless has a good show on PBS & has a couple of places in Chicago that offer that type of Mexican food. Check out the menus & see if anything interests you.

Some "Interior Mexican" folks can be snobbish about "Tex-Mex"--although Bayless is not one of them. Houston Press food writer Robb Walsh wrote a book on Tex-Mex--much of it summarized in a series of articles published in the Press. Tex-Mex can be really excellent, too.

What's the name of the restaurant? It might have a website, or reviews online.
You might ask the wait-staff for recommendations. Let us know how it goes.
