Why do people go on living?
Edited on Fri Apr-07-06 11:59 PM by HypnoToad
It's easy enough to stop.

1. Because
At least right now, I think there's still a high probability my life will get better than it is at this point. If I ended it, I wouldn't be able to see if it does. So that's why I go on at least. I don't know why anyone else does. :-)

2. Is it? Can you stop living? Quantum physics might disagree...
"Quantum immortality" might come into play. It's an odd theory, but by accepting the "many-worlds" theory of the multiverse, it does branch off into the philosophical idea that one cannot ever truly die, or that death might actually take minutes or years to finalize.

3. Science, like religion, comes up with some bonkers way to explain it.
For, if we knew we would not continue in some form, we'd go nuts.

Whatever happens happens.

Fuck my diet. I'm going to make some popcorn.

8. But that's the scary thing, you might just go nuts because you can't die.
It's a huge hypothetical, but the possibility does slightly exist. You continue to exist on some ability of marginal consciousness and that is the greatest horror of all.

27. No shit.
It's getting very old. I hope he doesn't eventually get banned for continuing to do this even after having a dozen similar threads locked.

I like HT, but I hate these threads.

6. EASY??? do you realize how many attempted suicides I see
Edited on Sat Apr-08-06 12:18 AM by wildhorses
in the ER every freakin' night???

cowardly perhaps
brave.. possibly
but
EASY
I think NOT

what makes you think it is easy?

and for some reason this song came to mind when I saw this thread:P

Why does the sun go on shining?
Why does the sea rush to shore?
Don't they know it's the end of the world,
'Cause you don't love me any more?

Why do the birds go on singing?
Why do the stars glow above?
Don't they know it's the end of the world.
It ended when I lost your love.

I wake up in the morning and I wonder,
Why everything's the same as it was.
I can't understand. No, I can't understand,
How life goes on the way it does.

Why does my heart go on beating?
Why do these eyes of mine cry?
Don't they know it's the end of the world.
It ended when you said goodbye.

Why does my heart go on beating?
Why do these eyes of mine cry?
Don't they know it's the end of the world.
It ended when you said goodbye.

9. hmmmm....
Lyrics to the M*A*S*H theme song, "Suicide is Painless":
--------------------------------------------------------
Through early morning fog I see
visions of the things to be
the pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see...

that suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.

I try to find a way to make
all our little joys relate
without that ever-present hate
but now I know that it's too late, and...

The game of life is hard to play
I'm gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
so this is all I have to say.

The only way to win is cheat
And lay it down before I'm beat
and to another give my seat
for that's the only painless feat.

The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger...watch it grin, but...

A brave man once requested me
to answer questions that are key
is it to be or not to be
and I replied 'oh why ask me?'

'Cause suicide is painless
it brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.

...and you can do the same thing if you choose.

16. Or - as Dorothy Parker said
Razors pain you;
Rivers are damp;
Acids stain you;
And drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren't lawful;
Nooses give;
Gas smells awful;
You might as well live.

15. Hey, Hypnotoad
I know you've been have thoughts like that for a long time. Is it just when you drink that you lose your inhibitions and let out something that is usually going through your mind?

I was suicidal for a long time. One thing that kept me going through those times was the thought that I'm going to die some day. Why not hang around in this lifetime and see if things get better? Things did get better and I'm happy to be alive now.

21. Sex, Love and
overwhelming masochism.

The world sucks, but it always has and always will. The only thing we truly get from this life is the experience of having lived it, so why not just go with the flow (or against the flow as I prefer), and ride it out until the end.

If you bail early you might miss something cool.

25. As my dad says, "living is better than the alternative".
Right now I'd say life if pretty darn sweet on the whole. No desire to stop here before it really gets started.

26. I like you-I really do-but these hints-of-suicide threads are getting old.
Please get help if you are dealing with depression that's leading you to think about ending your life.

I say this as a person who likes you and hates to see you publicly doing this to yourself.

I tend to believe that this is a copycat of some sort, which I hope it is. Otherwise, DU members are not qualified to provide you with the help that you might need. There's a crisis hotline number 1-800-784-2433 you can always call.
