If someone intentionally killed your dog......
Should you be allowed to kick their damn ass? Im asking cuz I was reading the local paper a month or so ago and saw an article about a guy who shot this other guys dog for no other reason than because he didnt like the owner. So the owner of the now executed dog picked up HIS gun and went and shot the guy who shot his dog.

He didn't kill him, but he really wounded him. Now I'm not for shoting people, but I think this guy should have been allowed to beat this guys ass. If someone INTENTIONALLY shot or killed my dog in some other fashion, I would kick the persons ass. My dogs are a member of my family and I treat them as such.

1. a bunch of teenagers killed our dog when i was in the 4th grade.
They shot him 4 times but that didn't kill him. We did everything in our power to get them back, but the cops said they couldn't do anything since they didn't kill him. He had a long recovery and was doing great. We put the dog on a leash (even though we lived out in the boonies so that he could run free) but he would always break loose. Then one day they shot him again, and this time they killed him. Once they killed him I don't know what the cops did, if anything, but the man who owned the property they were renting kicked them out.

6. They probably are in jail by now.
It was a small town and I'm sure their parents knew someone to get them out of any charges. I'm not sure why they did it. The dog (His name was Fair Fax but we called him Fax) was the sweetest dog I have ever been around. I loved him to death. He was a chinook and a big dog, but we loved to let him in a night because he would come upstairs and go back and forth all night sleeping at the ends of my brother's bed and mine. (it was like Fax was trying to be "fair" by going back and forth, lol)

i miss him so much.

here is a picture of him that was taken about 4 weeks before he got shot the first time.

2. I am a pacifist. I don't believe violence solves anything
We have a criminal justice system for a reason: vigilante justice does NOT work.

If somebody intentionally killed one of my pets, I would want that person prosecuted for his crime. I would expect him to pay damages and serve the community in a constructive way.

"Kicking his ass" solves nothing. But it DOES give him another reason to commit violence against me. Which in turn leads to more violence.

An eye for an eye leaves everybody blind.

9. Yes, but ppl who harm animals RARELY get jail time and if
they DO its some pathetic sentence like a few months. I believe that ppl who abuse animals almost ALWAYS end up killing ppl in the end. Just look at every serial killer. They ALL started killing and torturing animals. I understand that violence doesnt solve anything, but I'd still have to make them pay for hurting a member of my family. To each his own. :)

11. But what would kicking his ass solve?
If he's a sociopath, it just reinforces his delusions that violence an acceptable response to anger and hate.

If you want to make him pay, sue his ass in court. Emptying his wallet will probably hurt him more than any kind of physical beating you put on him.

20. nnns,

i was a cop for 20+ years.

cops are garbage-collectors that clean up the messes of society. MOST unlikely that they will resolve this problem, y the next attack may well be more serious.

no disrepect intended, just my cynical world-view from watching the system at work. this mope will be encouraged by the lack of meaningful retribution for his vicious behavior. it may cost some serious cash in lawyer-fees, but that will only piss him off more. AND he likes killing.

28. The guy's got mental problems
Anybody who harms another living thing for kicks should be locked up and treated. Beating the shit out of him will not do anything but give him yet another reason to attack others.

Are the laws too lenient? Hell yes. But they're still the laws. We may disagree with them, but still we obey them-- or we work together to change them. I'm suprised that as a former peace officer you'd advocate taking the law into your own hands and hurting somebody else.

I work for the government in social services. The people I serve are the most disadvantaged people in our society. Due to our fucked-up priorities, many of them are mentally ill and not getting the treatment they need. Many of them have done bad, anti-social things because of their illnesses. Inflicting physical pain on people like that will not stop them from hurting somebody else-- if anything, it will encourage them.

32. Mental Illnesses are serious, but most of them have a choice.
Edited on Sat Apr-08-06 10:42 PM by philosophie_en_rose
If a mental health condition is really fueling rage or whatever sickness it takes to harm an animal - than it is a better solution to fund treatment. However, I suspect that the majority of cat killers, dog throwers, and livestock mutilators are not mentally ill in the same sense of the term. Many of them consciously choose to be selfish and nihilistic. (Such as the gang of preppy rich boys that killed cats in the town near my home). It's just cool to them. Is beating the hell out of someone going to solve that problem?

Maybe. If you look at it from their view, those that can exert more violence are the ones that get to control others. A swift and harsh beating could possibly lead them to stop whatever they're doing.

Violence is an easy way out that reinforcing negative values. Neither taking the easiest route nor promoting violence amoung the heartless is probably very productive. However, I can definitely understand the rage of a person that just lost a pet to a killer who will likely go unpunished and continue to torture helpless animals. If I came upon someone hurting my dog, I certainly wouldn't stand there and watch. There is a time for treatment, but - in the moment - I think that proportional and reasonable force is fair to protect an animal or yourself. If there's no threat, however, I would find a non-violent way to ensure that the bastard wouldn't do it again.

for the good you do to unfortunates.

we are Not discussing a person here that
is unable to cope w/ society in a meaningful fashion. this person clearly is a sociopathc personality and, what little that I know of psychopaths indicates that they are untreatable and tend to escalate their antisocial behavior. perhaps you know of some treatment that can rehabilitate these people.

our OP is in serious danger.

the LE community in this country has MANY problems. for example, they tend to incarcerate people of color for choosing to use a recreational chemical other than that whick is approved by "society". our penal institutions are crammed full of dusky-hued persons that have chosen to smoke marajuana, a substance that has NO proven antisocial side-affects beyond a certain lethargy whilst under the influence; yet alcohol has DEMONSTRATIVE destructive affects both to the user, the immediate family, and any unlucky person that crosses their path during their more reptilian episodes.

They're much too busy to keep constant surveilance on true sociopaths.

A man capable of killing a harmless, lovable pet out of spite of some perceived slight is merely 1 step beyond taking the same action against the other pets, the family, or the person that has commited this slight. I agree that causing injury to this person, such has having him jailed for a short period of time or causing him the financial loss of paying for a lawyer to defend himself, is likely to escalate the incident.

you have misunderstood the intent of my solution. a sock full of wet sand will not dissuade this person from retribution. applied w/ force, especially repeatably to the base of the skull removes this person permanently from the situation. it also leaves NO forensic evidence to tie the person defending his household to the demise of the offender. it will almost certainly be attributed to an accidental death.

cops can ONLY punish the offender & he will eventually be freed; recidivism among this type of offender is almost a certainty, especially since treatment, as innefectual as it is, is practically non-existent in our penal system.

you choose to characterize my advice as vigilantism. I choose to view it as self-defense.

after a career of seeing recidivistic individuals performing MUCH more heinous acts after release, i feel the proper way to deal w/ a sociopath in the same manner as 1 wd deal w/ a rabid dog.

if that makes me a bad person and an improper liberal; i'm prepared to accept your low opinion of me; i'll
STILL do what i have to do. and get away scott free.

EDIT: i guess this post will be deleted, too. stand by my opinion, though.

44. I know most cops are as you describe
however, we had one here that was a dog killer. Especially of large dogs. He'd justify it by saying he thought he saw illegal activity on the property and the dog tried to stop him.

I walked out of my front door one morning to find him sitting in his car with his gun leveled at my dogs out his window. Dogs were in a fenced yard with the gate padlocked. Scared the shit out of me and I had to wonder that if he had decided to shoot and I actually saw him do it, would I have 'accidently' gotten in the way of another bullet.

The complaint I made almost got taken seriously. They reprimanded him, told him that if anything happened to my dogs he'd be in deep shit BUT they didn't fire, suspend or otherwise take action against him at that time. Until he drove up into a guy's driveway...in his cop car...and ran over 2 German Shepherds. Backed up over them and ran over them again. He did get some jail time for that one.

I truely believe animal cruelty should be more severe. They should definately get jail time (at least) I have two strong causes - Children & Animals. These people who abuse animals or children are the lowest of the low.

I would hope that I would have the good sense to look after my poor puppy first. Try to get him or her to the vet. However, I feel a great deal of rage even thinking about the kind of person that enjoys hurting dogs.

In reality, I would call the police, prosecute, sue, publicize, and do everything I could to legally punish the bastard. However, a big part of me would want that person to end up like Elijah Wood in Sin City.

If a person would torture and kill a dog, they're working up to people.
