Poll question: Which was the cooler band?
Paul Revere and the Raiders?

Or the Dave Clark Five?

1. It's a toss-up
The DC5 had a consistently cool, almost proto-hard rock sound, but (unless they branched out a little more on some stuff I haven't heard) didn't really ever change their sound too much. Paul Revere and the Raiders changed their sound more over the course of their career; starting out like a garage band and ending up going as a poppy rock band. (Though FWIW, I do like their poppier "Raiders" material, but I'm willing to bet there are plenty of garage fans who think it's a travesty that PR&R's only #1 hit was "Indian Reservation"!)

As for their style, Paul Revere and the Raiders might lose some points for their wardrobe. Then again, that is sort of their own individual thing, so maybe I'm not giving them enough credit for it.

Oh well, I like both of them, and I hate making decisions. So I guess I'm won't! :-)

2. It's interesting to note that neither band's name features the lead singer
The Raiders' lead singer was Mark Lindsey, not Paul Revere. The DC5's was Mike Smith, not Dave Clark.

Go figure.

3. RAIDERS by a long shot
They were punk before there was punk, and grunge before there was grunge. They're one of the pioneers of the "northwest sound".

Most people just remember them from the cheezy TV show, but they were actually quite a rocking group. Don't believe me? Pick up the double-CD "'63-'67: The Essential Ride" and have a listen. They're version of "Louie Louie" is as punk as the version the Stooges did a decade later on "Metallic K.O.".

The Raiders all reunited a few years back for some shows, and supposedly the reunion shows were as amazing as their original shows.

9. To be fair -
"Indian Reservation" started life as a pretty cool folk-protest song by Don Fardon. Mark Lindsay covered it as a solo, right around the time his solo career was catching fire. He suggested to Paul Revere that they put some extra background tracks on it and release it as "The Raiders" instead (note, not "Paul Revere And...."), because he felt a little guilty for having some success when Revere couldn't buy a hit anymore. So it never really was a Paul Revere and the Raiders song, but ironically became their only #1.

10. Aw come on now...
You're forgetting all about "Just Like Me" and "Kicks". In fact, my band covers "Kicks" it's such a swell song.

And like you said, they DID have a guy named Fang! :D
