I found DU not too long after September 11, 2001, actually. Shrub's 90-percent approval ratings in the weeks that followed had me seeking refuge, looking for some place where people still saw through all of his lies. I started reading the "Top Ten Conservative Idiots" (I believe) via Buzzflash, found the forums, and after a few weeks of lurking, finally registered.

Four days after 9/11, I yelled at a patriotic commercial on my TV, "Dammit, stop telling me how to feel!" And to my surprise, I actually started feeling better! I knew something was definitely wrong--with either myself or the way the reaction to 9/11 was being, well, scripted. So I started hitting to Internet to see if I could find like-minded people. I found some at Michael Moore's site, which led me to Democrats.com, which accidentally led me to DU. In response to a welcome post, I wrote, "I've finally found a safe haven!"

I was writing on Ukonline's free speech board much of 2001 and 2000.
i don't believe i'm number 112... its too early. It wasn't until the
UK closed its primary public free speech board that i migrated to DU.
Gosh, i wish i were worthy of your very humbling remark.

:-) To my recollection, i did not begin heavy posting here until after
9/11. I could have died that day, so i figured since i'm a dead person
walking, why not post the intelligence that they tried to kill that day,
the way i see it... screwem if they can't take a joke....

that i'm around number 10,000... and that
the numbering system is missing this 2-order of magnitude
difference. My pioneering work, when DU was doing its early,
was in London on the number10.gov.uk free speech board.

Yes i am an early pioneer, been writing on online boards
including usenet since the early 90's. I always had a vision
that one day, it would be like live-shakespeare, and for
a writer who loves the inspired dynamic, 100 brilliant writers
cooperatively developing a coversation is something a playwright
can only dream of.

But i think i'm tired of writing online now, and lots of people
are coming around who love the trade, now that it has become more
mainstream... bush was defeated on DU early
on, but it has taken years for the decapatation to register with
the inert body politic.

I found DU through Al gore's old site, drawn in to the whole
thing by my president after all, in a time of need, i serve him
until his 2 terms are up.

I discovered DU within weeks of its inception, but lacked a computer at home and could only check briefly from work. So I didn't much. And only joined 8 months after it had been started.

You must really have been an early member. I remember the date I joined because it was the Monday after the Sunday that the bombing of Afghanistan began. And I did not have a home computer until the following January, so there was a time spread between the time I joined and started posting much.
