What would it take for you to kill someone? |
|
I mean literally kill them.
We were discussing this at work (it's OK, it was a slow night). You hear people say, "I could just kill him/her!" but what would need to happen for them to really follow through on that threat.
How about you?

If something or someone were threatening my children I would be ready to defend them at any cost. Like you I don't want to have to find out how far I would go or how much damage I would do.

in self-defense, and in defense of a friend and his grandma, in whose house I was staying.
Knowing without a doubt that I could kill someone if I had to bothers me to this day, more than 12 years on. There are some things about myself I'd rather not know - this is in the top 3. :scared:

14. I had to shoot an intruder in my home 15 years ago |
|
It was more a reaction than a thought out plan. He's lucky I missed but unlucky that I got a good look at him and made a 100% identification when the cops picked him up in the neighborhood 20 minutes later. One neighbor who was up late heard the shot and saw where he ran to after he came out of my house. What could have happened? When we went to court we found out the guy had been convicted of numerous prior burglaries including one that even involved sexual battery four years prior to the incident.
Here in Florida they go easy on sexual predators that don't make the headlines and capture lots of public attention and public pressure for justice.

I don't know that I could kill anyone.
I'm a man who cries like a baby if he accidentally steps on a bug.
I would like to think I would protect myself, my loved ones, stop innocents being harmed. But killing? Only if there was no other choice and there usually is.
In cold blood? Out of anger? For revenge? For profit? NO.
However, I am beginning to think that randomly slapping people might be good social policy.....

In cold blood? No. Out of anger? No. For revenge? No. For profit? No.
However, when it comes to defense of me or my loved ones, I will do anything to end the attack.
Part of my work involves being around law enforcement officers as a computer consultant. I am licensed and trained to carry a concealed weapon in my state and in others. Trust me, LEO's take lethal force very seriously.
It isn't about killing someone, it's about self defense. Despite what the movies would have us believe, a sidearm is actually somewhat touch and go as a weapon. If lethal force is warranted there is none of this "shooting the weapon out of his hand" or "shooting him in the leg." If the situation is at that point, you must stop the threat NOW. And that means multiple shots into the center of mass.
It's not necessarily to kill, it's to STOP.
Having never been faced with this situation, I wonder if push comes to shove that I could pull the trigger. I hope so.
To answer the original question, yes I could kill someone, but the killing would be a side effect, not necessarily the intention. If that makes any sense.

57. I understand what you mean |
|
You're talking about protecting people - yourself, loved ones, others - as opposed to outright murder.
Still, there is a line that can be crossed. I almost did. I tried to kill a guy. And it wasn't a side effect, it was the sole intention. I didn't do it, though. But it was hard not to and it was hard to believe I might could have.
But I understand what you are saying. It could happen but it would not be your intent.
Khash.

20. I once restrained myself from throwing a guy off a 3rd floor stair well |
|
It was an outside stairwell in an apt bulding.
I had finally had enough of my now ex yelling at me and emotionally abusing me.
As I listened to this raving lunatic, something in me snapped. All those years of beine frightened he might turn violent and being reduced to tears finally took their toll.
I looked at him, at his contorted, red, screaming face with an odd detachment. The only thing I could think about was how lovely it would feel to see his twisted body at the bottom of the stairs. Perhaps dead, perhaps with a broken neck. And I had absolutely no doubt I could do it. It would just me soooo simple. I could do it because he would be so surprised. He wouldn't believe it, even as it was happening....
I frightened myself enough that the only thing I did was turn around, and without one word, walk right back into my apartment and slam the door shut. He banged on the door and continued to yell for several minutes, so much so I wondered if the lock would hold. But it did and he finally left.
That was ten years ago this spring. March or April, I'm not sure which anymore. The only thing I know is, I don't let people get to me anymore. And that person has been permanently removed from my life.

|
If my life or the lives of people I cared for (or even the lives of perfect strangers) were in danger I think I would be capable of killing someone.
Reminds me of a movie quote;
Jurgen: Will you kill him?
Preston: Yes.
(pause)
Jurgen: Can you?
Preston: I don't know...
I hope never to be in a situation where I have to find out.

|
I feel bad when I step on a worm after the rain, but anybody who tried to hurt LeftyKid would be quickly relieved of thier mortal coil and I would not hesitate or feel the slightest twinge of guilt about it.
I could kill somebody to defend myself but I'd feel guilty afterward. To protect LeftyKid there'd be only relief that he was safe and concern for his long-term wellbeing.

But then, I'm something of a sociopath. Fortunately nobody's ever managed to both a: make me mad enough for the mental chains I put on myself to completely snap and b: be accessible once I've snapped.
But the three major things that would guarantee instant death for someone: Trying to hurt my dad, animal abuse, trying to hurt the few friends I have that I really care about.

Especially if it was older kids bullying him or trying to hospitalize him. If there's one thing I do not tolerate, it's meathead fucking jocks bullying smaller kids. I read stories about kids getting "broomed" (That is, raped with a broomstick), it makes my goddamned blood boil. Once I found out who did it, age or gender be damned, they're getting fucked up beyond repair. Their parents interfere, they'll get mowed down with them, and it won't end until the pigs come and beat me.
