Prayers/good thoughts/vibes needed...
for me, but especially for my friend.

I woke up today with a croupy cough, prepared to study for what is going to be a hellish week academically for me. Anyway, I got an e-mail from one of my best friends. She said that she'd been noticing strange bruises on her body lately, and she went to the doctor, who said that her platelet count is extremely low. She needs to go to a specialist and get further tests done. She's my age (19), and her mom is already battling breast cancer...in short, it's not what her family needs right now. Any positive thoughts you can send her and her family right now would be much appreciated. Thanks. :)

I appreciate it a lot. Feeling kind of helpless and stressed at the moment. When I see her at Easter, I'll be sure to give her an extra .

15. Thanks.
I've been talking to her through IM...she seems to be holding up okay, but I know she's scared. Her mom's cancer is a relatively new thing (last fall) and it's still all sinking in for her. Again, thanks for your positive thoughts. Every little bit helps. :hi:

14. You got it! I was 19 when I had the same problem...
Edited on Sun Apr-09-06 04:31 PM by auntAgonist
I had to see a hematologist. Turns out I had Idiopathic Thromocytopaenia Purpua <sp>. I was on Cortisone for 3 months but all that did was give me giant headaches, nausea and I lost a LOT of sleep. I had my spleen removed and that cured it.
ITP isn't that terribly uncommon and relatively easy to fix. Don't worry yourself any sicker than you already are. Hang in there, It will be OK!
I wish her all the best, AND I hope you feel better too. Lots of Vit C!!!

17. Thanks.
I've been popping pills and orange juice throughout the day, trying desperately to finish a massive study guide. :)

She's had a hell of a year: major hip surgery last summer (was laid up or in a wheelchair or crutches until late fall), her mom was diagnosed with the cancer last fall as well, and now this. Not to mention the transition to college life. More serious medical issues isn't what this poor family needs right now...I'm hoping you're right, and that it's a realtively benign problem.

18. Wow, unusual to have major hip surgery at that age unless from accident,
or congenital hip dysplasia etc.

19. Yeah...
It was a situation in which her hips and her kneecaps weren't lined up correctly (something like that...I'm certainly not a doctor :)). It was only on one hip, but eventually, she'll have to do it all over again for the other one. It really sucked...was the day after our high school graduation...she spent most of last summer in bed. :(

20. Yes I'm familiar with that of which you speak. That'd be the most likely
reason, I'd think.
