Post which music artists you'd like to see get much more attention
Edited on Mon Apr-10-06 03:33 PM by mvd
There's no standard this time. Just ones that you feel are very underappreciated by the public.

Of the semi-popular artists, I'd like to see ones like Michelle Branch, Kay Hanley, Nina Gordon, Lisa Loeb, David Gray, Blue October, New Pornographers, Radiohead, Sleater-Kinney, The Donnas, Cheap Trick, Annie, Goldfrapp, Dixie Chicks, Saving Jane, Miranda Lambert, The Veronicas, Fountains Of Wayne, Rosanne Cash, and Anna Nalick get to be household names.

And these are some great artists who just need attention period right now:

Rainer Maria
Margot & Nuclear So & So's
Magneta Lane
Josh Ritter
Jo Davidson
Abra Moore
Bonnie McKee
Rhett Miller
Joseph Arthur
Hope 7
The Faders
Laura Dawn
The Cottars
Idlewild
Fefe Dobson
The Wreckers
Stars
Neko Case solo
Plumb
Fefe Dobson
Duncan Sheik
The Jayhawks
Angela Ammons
Hope Partlow (good album and even more promise)
Brie Larson
Sufjan Stevens
Stacie Rose
Julie Gribble
The Like
Amy Rigby
The Decemberists
Leona Naess
Thea Gilmore
Katherine Schell
Sonya Kitchell
Teenage Fanclub
Fisher
Eisley
Brandi Carlile
Lucinda Williams
Kasey Chambers
Steve Earle
Kathleen Edwards
Mary Gauthier
Halo Friendlies
My Morning Jacket
Cat Power
Herman's Hermits
Jenny Lewis/Rilo Kiley
Tuuli
Martha Wainwright
Jerra
Hank Williams III
Courtney Jaye
Leslie Mills
Fisher
Rogue Wave
Cindy Alexander
Aslyn
Keren
Marion Raven/M2M
Tegan And Sara
Maria Mena
Butterfly Boucher
Paul Revere & The Raiders
Shanti
The Postal Service
Mindy Smith
The Effection
The Raveonettes (more so for Chain Gang Of Love)
Kate Rusby

And more - I'll stop now.

3. Another good choice
Their songs are well constructed and well-sung enough not to feel guilty while having fun.

5. I hear them all the time on satelite radio
Edited on Mon Apr-10-06 03:19 PM by Droopy
but they haven't cracked the commercial market, yet, at least not where I live. That "nth Degree" song is really catchy as well as funny. Something about a chick singing about morning wood, "To the nth degree!"

9. That's my fave on the CD
Edited on Mon Apr-10-06 03:24 PM by mvd
Also something great about "Take Off Your Clothes" - lol. Talking about that one too much could get me in trouble with the other mods. :-)

Similarly, I hear "Girl Next Door" a lot on Satellite Radio, but Saving Jane hasn't broken through completely.

Edited on Mon Apr-10-06 03:18 PM by mvd
That I don't follow as much. There was an R&B/rock artist named Kina that should have been big, And Res.

More from rock/pop:

A great one hit wonder: Merril Bainbridge. Loved her album.

On the guilty pleasure side, Stella Soleil.

Boston area singer/songwriter who's considered folk but I think his music crosses more lines.

20. I have her CD Freaky Little Story
Strong vocals, and unique lyrics. Musically, it has pop/rock, folk, and even some songs that are a better version of Ani DiFranco. She can do it all!

I don't have Lady is a Pirate, her earlier CD.

19. Yeah. I want them to get enough attention to maintain themselves.
Don't want them to go under, of course, or break up because thay can't keep it going, but I want them to write good music, not mainstream-radio-corporate-fanboy/fangirl-pleasing crap.

27. While I'm not against radio-friendly stuff per se,
there is still a danger of becoming just another product. Liz Phair's one that adapted well IMO to pop, but look at Aerosmith in the 90s.

Although I haven't really gotten into anything from the Samples since that great drummer left.

I saw Porcupine Tree live a couple of times last year. They were great!

More of a concept than a proper band, but definitely underappreciated.

I'm going to go with Tom Waits as well. Not that he doesn't have quite a following already, but dammit, everyone should love him.

34. Iris Dement!
She has played with Merle Haggard, John Prine, and Steve Earle. Her husband is folkie Greg Brown.
Iris Dement has a voice like an angel and sings songs that touch your soul.

Iris is what country music SHOULD be. Her song, 'Mama's Opry' is modern country that actually sounds like it comes from the tradition of Hank Sr, Patsy Cline, and the rest of country music's true lineage. IE Iris Dement ain't no Nashville lapdancer! (but she is beautiful!)

I cannot heap enough praise on Iris Dement to do her justice. Pick up one of her cds and listen for herself if you like honest, organic, and beautiful country music. She is just the very best.

Oh yeah. She is also quite the liberal! Check out her song 'Wasteland of the Free.' Wingers were actually heckling her while she sang it at the show I was at! Fortunately, they were drowned out and shamed into silence.

I discovered Iris by chance. I hope that others will stumble across this living genius too.

Still have to get a CD from her. I'm a big CD buyer, but there are so many out there that some get overlooked.

Hem is also great at country/folk. I've decided to start at the CD Rabbit Songs instead of the recent covers CD, No Word From Tom.

The Sounds is a group I just bought a CD from - forgot to mention them.

Edit to change name to Loveless. I had Lovelace at first, that was what she went by orginally. Lovelace was her married name.
