Midnight Movies (Part III) - Reefer Madness
I only saw it one time. It was hilarious as it was an anti-drug, propaganda film gone wild.
The "demon weed" that made ordinary youths go on murder sprees and go insane.

1. I think that's the one where the guy breaks...
off the wine bottle neck, then drinks it. It was damned stupid.

2. And the "demon weed" would make the teens listen and dance to...
...wild, crazy and just as evil....jazz music if my memory serves me correct.

3. I never found it funny
Over-the-top propaganda, horrid acting, wretched writing, meandering story, etcetera. It's a real buzzkill.

when they were in their late teens.
I thought it was hilarious.
They thought I was a narc.

8. Only once so far.
There used to be a show on British TV called "Exploitica", which basically took early exploitation/propaganda fare and techicolour Euro-madess (The Ringing Singing Tree & its ilk) and redub the voices, add thought balloons or do pop-up-video style captions. Needless to say, I like it a lot.

They featured Reefer Madness a few times and it looked wonderfully over-the-top and hysterical, so I was thrilled to get to see it in full last year. All in, it's a bit of a let down, but it's still a wonderfully entertaining film. I've got my eye on the special edition DVD with commentary from Mike Nelson (MST3K). I also want "Cocaine Fiends"

I ordered the Sex & Buttered Popcorn boxset last week for just over a tenner, although it's yet to arrive. Looks very cool:

Tease, Sleaze and Social Disease - TOMORROW'S CHILDREN (1934) The most daring, sensational drama ever filmed about a daring "hush-hush" subject! Find out exactly what the subject is... but don't say you weren't warned! Sterling Holloway steals the show.

THE STORY OF DE 733 (aka "The Ship of Shame") (1942) Every sailor in boot camp learns that the 13 buttons on their bell bottom trousers are 13 chances to say "No". However, come shore leave the crew on this ship ignores that advice. Not only is there a long line at sick bay, but the ship itself runs into peril! Stars Keefe Braselle.

Vintage Shorts: "Spectacle Underwater", "Stars Of Burlesque", and J. Carrol Naish in "Know For Sure!"

Sex, Sin And Salvation -

Feature #1: "She Shoulda' Said No!" (aka "Wild Weed") (1949) starring Lila Leeds whose climb to fame was being arrested with Robert Mitchum at a 1948-pot party! How bad can a good girl get?without losing her virtue and self respect? Produced by legendary exploiter, Kroger Babb.

Feature #2: "Mad Youth" (1934) Mary Ainslee and William Costello find the daring pitfalls of the streamlined age are revealed before their very eyes in this jitterbug classic.

Vintage Nudie-Cutie Shorts: "We Still Believe It" and "Your Pin Up Girl"

Grandad's Forbidden Follies -

"Elysia" (1934) - Discover the secrets of life at a nudist camp in this breakthrough film. In 1934 they tried everything to keep you from seeing it. Why? See for yourself! Remember, they wear only the wind!

"The Road to Ruin" (1934) - The "no-no's" of proper behavior were "yes-yes" to the promoters of this film. Good girl smokes marijuana, drinks booze and has intimate relations leading to...! Helen Foster stars.

Special added attraction, "How to Undress in Front of Your Husband" (1934) Starring Mrs. John Barrymore.

Vintage Short: "Expose Of The Nudist Racket"

Sex And Buttered Popcorn

The hilarious true story of Hollywood's underbelly...the exploitation films, as told in rare film clips and interviews with the original purveyors of passion! "Uncut! Uncensored! Unashamed!" proclaimed these Hollywood Roadshowmen. They sold sex and sin, sugar frosted with salvation, the latter making it permissible to cater to the forbidden and frowned-upon appetites of middle America. All across our heartland one and two nights of naughty titillation were offered as exposés and insights. SEX AND BUTTERED POPCORN is an affectionate peek at an era of American motion picture-making which had its roots in the tanbark and tinsel of the traveling carnival and which flourished from the twenties through the fifties.

Bonus Shorts: "Striptease Revealed", "They Wear No Clothes", and a "Square Up" Reel

11. "Exploitica"
Did they ever show any "Cold War" or "Vietnam" propaganda? The type that used to show russian people as big, bushy eyebrowed people that wanted to kill us and spread communism around the world.
