why would they joke and call my small, female solid black cat Silas Marner?

these are new people to the neighborhood and the first time I met them. the cat was sitting on the gate post listening to our conversation.

they pointed to her and said is that Silas Marner and I said no her name is Smartipants. and they said, oh, we thought it was Silas Marner.
