The ferret nips him on the ankles. The dog runs to me for protection

1. He's just trying to be nice
He doesn't want to kill the poor critter with a single clamp of his jaws.

2. Like a much older sibling saying "Mom? Do something with this brat?"
Otherwise, Fraticide is looking better every minute.

3. Cat vs Dog
My mother brings her Yorkie over occasionally. Back when she first started doing this, I had a big male cat named Hamlet. He and my other cat were terrified of the dog at first -- until Hamlet figured out he was nearly three times the dog's size. Then he would just look at her like, "Yeah, right. You're 14 years old and missing half your teeth, and I'm a lot bigger than you. Give me a break!"

4. I have to control the
ferrets very strictly around the dogs, afraid one day the dogs will realize that they are only one bite. But they terrorize the cats nipping on their paws just to get them to run so they can play tag.
