The RetroLounge Daily Poem Thread (Fri 4/14/06)
Science

Science was invented by a bunch of guys who were so ugly
they couldn't possibly believe in God.

How smart are we?
We descended from apes --
now we dress like them on halloween.

It is said that a barrel of monkeys are fun;
monkeys evolved into humans who
invented barrels to put monkeys in
so it would be fun.
Monkeys aren't any fun on their own,
so maybe it's just barrels that are fun.
Shooting fish in a barrel is supposed to be easy --
this makes simple Darwinian sense:
barrels were fashioned by natural selection to
make shooting fish easy.

"Monkey see, monkey do" was the first
example of eye-hand coordination;
the pie in the face was next.
I threw a birthday cake at the man who
shot Liberty Valance. He was 24.
Nowadays we can't figure out why
smallpox is so funny.

Tyrannosaurus rex didn't really look like that;
he wasn't really built like that --
walking upright,
on two legs with those dinky little arms…
eating flesh like that --
there's no way he could hunt like that.
He was a veggo if ever there was one.
We found a bunch of bones lying around and
we think we know how they fit together.
Right.
They've arranged those bones in all sorts of ways.
They've come up with all sorts of crazy-shaped beasts.
This one just happens to look the most ferocious.
Some kid
probably liked it the best.
It sells dinosaur books.

3. here's some Lorca for you
Ditty of First Desire

In the green morning
I wanted to be a heart.
A heart.

And in the ripe evening
I wanted to be a nightingale.
A nightingale.

(Soul,
turn orange-colored.
Soul,
turn the color of love.)

In the vivid morning
I wanted to be myself.
A heart.

And at the evening's end
I wanted to be my voice.
A nightingale.

Soul,
turn orange-colored.
Soul,
turn the color of love.

5. I love Lorca
too bad I don't read Spanish. I have a Lorca anthology with English on one side and the original Spanish on the other. I should probably get my kid to read it to me, he's taking Spanish.

:hi: You have inspired me with these threads, I'm going to post some poetry in my journal when I get around to it.
