Poll question: Do you audibly talk to yourself when you're alone? |
|
Edited on Fri Apr-14-06 05:09 PM by LoZoccolo
I used to think I was weird for bringing my internal monologue external every now and then when it gets particularly lively and no one's around to catch me doing it, but then I found out that every person who I've asked said they do it too! I think it's funny that this is something that probably most people do and yet they talk about it less than something that I would mention if sex threads were allowed.
I'm not talking about talking to an imaginary person, I'm talking about talking to yourself audibly the way you normally talk to yourself in your head. Do you do this too?
And yes, I already know that the CUckoos will take this thread and post it on their site as evidence of our collective insanity...so hi guys.

If I'm thinking (talking) about something important or something I need to work out or something I need to remember, it can be easier to organize my thoughts if I think out loud.

I do it at work (though I try to keep it rather quiet) because it helps me remember things and I also do it at home because... well, just because. As a matter of fact, I was doing it when I clicked on your post! :hi:

4. I've done it ever since I was a little kid. |
|
I am an only child and didn't have a lot of friends, so I talked to myself all the time. As an adult, I've tried several times to stop, but I never succeeded. Since I live alone, it's not really a problem, but I catch myself doing it when I'm shopping or such, and it's kinda embarassing.
I really don't think there's anything wrong with it--sometimes you just need to get out of your head, you know, but I do make fun of myself when I do it at work.

I'm also an only child who always did that, and living alone now, I still do it all the time. Unfortunately, I also tend to do it when I'm at work, or out and about, and I don't even realize I'm doing it. Until I get a weird look from someone or somebody mentions it to me, which is quite embarrassing.
BTW, welcome to DU.

And I still talk to myself. I figure I'm going to wind up as one of those bag ladies that have full-on discussions with themselves...
Edited for a grotesque spelling error.

12. Some things just have to be said out loud |
|
to see if they sound right. I have actually done the same- talked to myself in public. I just hold my cell phone to my ear to make it look like I'm talking to someone.

No big deal. If someone mentions it at work, I just tell them it's a private conversation and eavesdropping is rude.
Then, I point out that I also argue with myself and get pissed when I lose.
And then, I point out that, regardless of what they may think, it does not mean I'm crazy - As long as I'm answering myself........It's when I start hearing answers and no one is talking - that's when I'm going to start worrying about my sanity.

9. The other day I found myself transformed into.... |

an extremely excentric character (with a cokney accent - FYI ) that has this weird obsession with Paul McCartney. He kept talking about how overated McCartney is, in not just his chosen field in many different arenas, up to and including penis size.
Granted, you had to be there, but I was literally laughing out loud at myself.
So yeah, I talk outloud to myself.

I was just cussing out the dipshit woman on PBS' NOW who runs the "pregnancy center" that brainwashed the other girl into feeling bad about her abortion. Fucking right-wing assholes.

I first talked about this with my dad, and figured maybe I just had his genes or something. Then I started talking to other people and so far, there's just like this one person out there on DU who doesn't do it, and they are actually the abnormal one now.
