54. Back in my hometown, our old skate park was next to the softball field...
So they set the beer area up in the corner of the park, so we had old drunk people heckling us while we were skating. It was pretty annoying.

Right fielder's gotta have the best long arm on the club. Gotta be able to throw to third on one hop, accurately.

86. Just different strengths
I could never manage to play shortstop or second base, for instance. I just don't have the side to side mobility or quickness necessary to field well at those positions. What I have though is a big fucking bat, which makes me worth playing so I end up getting stuck into right field or first base to minimize my fielding damage. Right field is, I think, the easiest position to field from, but it's not a 'loser' position.

Hey someone's gotta bat cleanup afterall and who's gonna do it? That 120 pounder at 2nd base?

... but I love the game, anyway!

They used to love putting me behind the plate, though... I was the best at blocking the plate on guys trying to score... they could NOT knock me of the plate... get the ball to me in time and whoever's trying to score from third will... be... OUT!!! ;-)

Best of all, I NEVER had to throw from home!

60. It's not unheard of
Hal Chase, the Hall-Of-Fame first baseman, played three games at short, one at third and 35 at second. Likewise George Sisler, who played two games at second and two at third. But those guys were defensive geniuses.

Also note that Chase's fielding percentage at second was .890 and Sisler's .778. :scary:

74. not shortstop
shortfield/leftcenter field
it is the 4th outfielder that softball has ....baseball only has 3 outfielders
I play inbetween left field and centerfield
we call it shortfield where I am from and with good reason
it's kinda like a back up shortstop
I could play shallow and the guys in left and center could cover me deep
it musta worked pretty good cos we won some tournaments and trophies
and had fun doing it
(you were talking to me, right?)

sets the umps on fire, and grinds up the opposing team's parents and serves it to them in the form of chili, throws toothpaste at the mascots, and puts lawn jockeys in the outfield while singing "Ce sera sera" in Tlingit, spilling my Martini everywhere and yelling for Godot to show the fuck up, cuz he's late, and the fascist fucking umpires are gonna keep him from playin' cuz they hate fucking freedom.

I am the one who puts the noir and the dada in softball.

43. Pitcher or catcher
I played fastpitch softball for eight years (and before that it was coach-pitch and before that it was t-ball), and always wished my high school had had a team (I played in the local parks and rec league). We got to travel as all-stars, but the team changed every year. If a high school program was an option, I might have gotten a shot at playing softball in college. This is a walk down memory lane for me!

I used to pitch and play shortstop, then started alternating at catcher as well. I guess it was an empathy kind of thing - perhaps being a pitcher made me a better catcher. I just liked being where the action was with every batter up!

;)

67. Taunting is a highly prized skill in baseball
It's called "bench jockeying," and every ball club has at least one guy who specializes in it — perhaps more these days, since it now requires fluency in Japanese, Chinese and Korean, as well as English and Spanish. (How do you say "Dunno how you get anybody out with that shit you throw" in Mandarin?)

As for the other thing, please see post no. 61.

:grr:

84. Concession stand? I wanna collect your money
but if i'm forced to play i'd probably end up crying. i don't like playing sports. and there's no crying in baseball, so i have nowhere to go. oooh! can i hang out in the outfield picking dandelions? i don't have to catch or anything, right? i just wanna pick dandelions.
