Student Loan Letter
A letter to the powers that be at the Florida Department of Education:

Commissioner Winn:

Today, April 15, 2006, I received a letter from Charles Mulvaney, the Senior Education Program Director of Recovery and Claims. The letter, dated April 4th, informed me that I have 20 days from the date of the letter to return the ENCLOSED Request for Hearing AND Statement of Financial Stautus to the recovery and claims office, or the amount deducted from my disposable earnings will automatically be increased to 15%.

I'm sure the term "disposable earnings" is a legal one that does not actually mean funds that can be frittered away without consequence by the wage earner. None of my earnings are disposable. I use my money to pay bills and buy food.

The letter included a Request for Hearing, but there was no Statement of Financial Status enclosed with the letter.

The Post Offices will reopen on Monday, April 17. That will give me only 1 week from the date of the letter to gather the proper documentation and send it to the DOE.

Given that it took 11 days for the letter dated April 4 to reach me in Central Florida from Tallahassee, I have little confidence that a request for the missing form will be fulfilled in a timely manner.

I intend to call the Recovery and Claims office first thing Monday morning to request a Statement of Financial Status form be mailed immediatley.

I request that an extension be granted to me for the purpose of waiting for the correspondence from the Recovery and claims Department to reach me, and the return of the required documents to them.

Please advise me if you are able to do this. Would you be so kind as to inform Mr. Mulvaney of your decision?

I can be reached during business hours at (xxx) xxx- xxxx ext xxx. After business hours, my contact phone number is (321) xxx- xxxx.

Sincerely,

XXXXXXXXX
