Demographically, I guess I might be a redneck.
But I've never hunted or even gone along on a hunt.
I eat meat, I admit. But I just never had an urge to go kill pretty animals.
Used to like to go fishing, but I haven't been in years. We'd either eat or release. Fishing and hurting "trophies" creep me out.

1. If you eat meat, you're killing pretty animals. |
|
You're just not getting your hands dirty in the process. I feel people shouldn't eat anything they couldn't kill/clean themselves.

but killing is most unpretty. i haven't eaten meat since the (unpopular) war; roated flesh smells like roasted flesh.
it's true that live must eat life; but make mine a salad and i'll open a can for the cats.
to haruka: i've never hunted what cdnt shoot back. but meat's meat, right?

10. I don't see what the issue is if they eat what they kill. |
|
If it's just to put a head up on your wall, then that's disgusting. I don't hunt personally. I've been fishing a bunch of times. The only meat I eat is fish, which I can kill and clean no problem.
I think it shows more respect for the animal to kill and clean it yourself and use everything you can than it does to pick up some chicken wings at the Shoprite that were raised in absolutely horrific factory farm conditions. People can justify it anyway they want, but eating any meat means killing an animal. Just because someone else killed it for you, doesn't mean you're not responsible for it's death.

33. How About Lightening Up A Little, OK? |
|
Every hunting thread seems to bring on unfortunate comments like yours. Spare us all the guilt trips about being omnivores, OK, sport? Nobody should have a second thought about downing a pork chop they collected at the local grocery store. And if those same people don't think sport hunting is cool, that's alright, too. Whatever class and nobility used to attach to hunting is disappearing, and in a big fucking hurry.
This fur-bearing elitism is getting really tiresome. Go kill something and barbecue it, and leave the rest of us alone.....

me. Culling a specific herd is one thing. Still, there is no glory in taking the life of an animal for sport.
One day, many more animals will be extinct and it will be then, too late, that we realize we were living in an enchanted paradise.

Never caught a fish that didn't get et, and the concept behind a deer head on the wall just eludes me.
Ellen Degeneres did a semi-snarky bit on it once.

I visited some family in Pueblo, CO when I was 13. I went upstairs to take a shower before we went to dinner that night, and as i was headed back downstairs, I got a shock. There was one of those mountain Goat ram heads just as you go down. I fell down three steps before I caught myself. Scared the shit out of me. Duckie

and ya know -- if we can get the wilderness/park highways opened up -- we could do a better job with that deer starving to death thingy.
we'd be better able to have that predator/prey ratio in it's proper balance.

if an area is overpopulated. The wildlife departments say that to justify hunting. The deer are managed by the state DNRs and wildlife agencies for the hunters, so there is usually not overpopulation.

If they were serious about bringing down the population by hunting methods they would hand out doe permits instead of restricting the hunters. Put an end to killing the trophy bucks and you'll see how many people are hunting for food.

Both correct. this is a gimmick to open up preserves for hunter-constituents,
w/ rare exceptions, HUMANS are the only animal that will overpopulate it's environment.

I remember a season my ex and 3 other hunters were assigned one doe permit. They could still kill a buck in addition to the one doe.

23. In Texas, depending on the county, |
|
one may harvest one, two, or even three bucks. In addition, up to six does may be taken. We have a real problem with starvation, blue nose, and excessive traffic loss due to overpopulation.

But yes, there are states that have commonly-issued doe permits. When I lived in MO I was able to get doe tags every year (depending on where I would hunt) and MO, at that time, had a very healthy herd.

Here in Austin, in the outlying areas deer are over populated. The wildlife agency cannot kill them becuase they are so over populated that they are in residential neighborhoods.
So much for development! :(

It's the truth. They manage them and let people hunt so that doesn't happen. If your area gets over run with deer, some of them are going to die of starvation because the ratio is out of whack. My dad used to be good friends with the Game Warden here in Oklahoma back in the day. I learned a lot from both of them. And just because you don't like something doesn't make it propaganda. Duckie

The DNR generates millions upon millions in deer hunting revenue. What would be the motivation for them to "cure" deer overpopulation when maintaining it is so very lucrative? This is business, pure and simple. Deer are commodities first, sentient beings second.
For the record, I have worked closely with several DNR wardens and a DNR vet, and I do not dispute the fact that some areas of the country are legitimately overpopulated, for various reasons not related to DNR control. But this is certainly the exception to the rule.

21. I hear you about trophies, |
|
They do indeed creep me out a bit. But generally most people I know who put up trophies are simply using all of the animal possible. They use the meat for food, the fur for warmth, the head for a trophy:shrug:
And while I haven't hunted in decades, I do know how to, and consider it a valuable skill to have. One never knows when you'll need it. And I haven't fished for almost a quarter century now. The fish are starting to become extremely contaminated with chemicals and such, therefore I'm not going to eat them. And I don't do "catch and release" because in most instances that is a death sentence for the fish.
I have nothing against those who hunt and fish for food. But yeah, sport hunters just piss me off.
