Best ALL-AMERICAN Rock Band
Underpants made this quote - which I disagree with:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=5035377&mesg_id=5038956

Allman Brothers are only surpassed by Skynyrd as the best Am. rock band

Although I'll buy into the Allman Brothers band being one of the best all-time american rock bands, I would hardly rate Lynard Skynard that high. And as I replied, I would probably put Kiss ahead of Lynard Skynard.

But these are just 3 of thousands of american born & raised rock & roll bands out there.

What do you think are the top 5 American Rock bands of all time. The entire band must have been born either in the United States or at least on a US military base overseas. They can be of all genre and of any era. Main thing is they need to be in general, some for of rock & roll band.

My five NOT in any order:

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
Allman Brothers Band
Green Day
Guns & Roses
Pearl Jam

And if we were talking British Bands it would be
Led Zeppelin
Beatles
Queen
U2
Radiohead

Because the Stones have been putting out nothing but sucky garbage since "Tatoo You" they pretty much took themselves off the list

7. um...
no, if we were talking British bands it would be:

Beatles
Smiths
Clash
Joy Division
and a toss-up between the Stones and Led Zeppelin (but only because David Bowie doesn't count as a 'band')

Oh, and U2 are Irish. From Dublin. Which is not British and hasn't been since 1922.

11. Ok, I'll give you U2 but definately Zeppelin over STones
Perhaps the best thing to happen to Led Zeppelin was the death of John Bonham because they ceased putting out any new records and thus enhanced the legend of Led Zeppelin. Rolling Stones' early releases are probably some of the best recordings out there but the Rolling Stones are so uninnovated that basically whatever is hot out there today they make their own "Stones" version of it. The quality of their music faded well over a decade ago and thus they have removed themselves from that list.

The remaining members of LZ have all put out solo & collaborative works together but nothing has been released as "Led Zeppelin" thus the image is intact (probably why the Page & Plant reunion tour was named "Page & Plant" and not Led Zeppelin - if they sucked, it wouldn't decrease the image of Led Zeppelin)

13. Aerosmith is the american version of the Rolling Stones
A legend of a band in their earlier works and not putting out schlock just to somehow remain relevant even those the music horribly sucks compared to said earlier works.

To be honest, Aerosmith was much better when they were wasted.

I don't think they are an American version of the Stones. The music is totally different. The only comparison I see is lip size of the frontmen. I love both, but I don't see the similarities.

And people who say they're washed up aren't really looking at their entire catalog. They've written enough classics to be at the top of the heap forever, it doesn't really matter what their most recent output has been.

50. they definitely did that
(but then again, what would a canadian sound have entailed in the mid/late 60s? ;))

I was just pointing out the birthplaces since the OP specified bands whose members were all born in the u.s. When I think of the American style, I think of The Band as being about the quintessential example, and I think all but one member of The Band was from Canada.

54. Skynyrd IS the best, in any nation
They have some deep tracks in their catalog. Ronnie was a far better writer than Gregg, and the band had some chops. Allen Collins could hold his own against the best of his time. Gary Rossington could play Paul Kossoff tremolo better than Kossoff. Billy Powell was the best piano player in rock. Ed King and Steve Gaines are the most unsung guitarists in any mainstream rock band. Those two brought Motown R&B flavors and chicken-pickin' jams that Duane Allman would admire had he lived to hear them play.

They never made a bad album either. The Allmans, although I love 'em, made some horribly regrettable tripe in their day ('Reach For The Sky' should have never been made). Plus, no one in Skynyrd married Cher, which counts.

Not only that, but Tom Dowd (look him up) produced albums for both bands, and loved them equally. Whereas the Allmans' version of the blues was channeled through jazz giants like Coltrane or Miles, Skynyrd channeled their blues through the British Invasion riffs of Cream, the Stones, or Jeff Beck.

Only CCR ranks as high, and not far behind them Gov't Mule and Little Feat, as far as American bands go. Throw in Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers or Uncle Tupelo and you have a helluva list.

Kiss? Well, they are better than Guns and Posers anyway. Better at marketing for sure.

You can only carry those labels so far, lol. The rock station I liked in Virginia in the early 80's could play South Central Rain back to back with AC/DC or whatever was de rigeur with those formats. :-)

I remember Peter Buck saying that growing up in Georgia, you couldn't help but be into Skynyrd or the Allmans. He didn't marry Cher either, if memory serves.
