Poll question: Your vote for the lamest automobile accessory or trick-out?
Edited on Mon Apr-17-06 08:51 PM by bertha katzenengel
Bumper Nuts gets my vote. :eyes: Haven't seen them? Go here --> http://www.bumpernuts.com/

What -- that a man is driving the car isn't enough to say "this car belongs to a man" -- is that it? Or maybe the man who feels compelled to hang a pair of plastic testicles off his truck does so because he feels inadequate in some way? (Nah... that couldn't be it.)

If your vote is "other," do identify the accessory.

I'm not gonna be around much longer. I just posted this poll as a way of saying "How STUPID some of the crap is that people put on their cars!"

8. You mean, sure that the guys who have them on their trucks
don't mean them as a joke?

No, I guess I'm not. But when they're on a truck that also carries a "Git-R-Done" sticker, a girlie sticker, a gun rack in the back window, and is driven by a guy who looks like he'd really enjoy it if his truck actually had nuts of its own, I have a good suspicion that they're not meant as a joke.

3. Rims worth more than the car
Car stereos designed to ruin hearing half a mile away by thumping the bass line but not playing the rest of a song in any recogniable way are a very close second.

thousand bucks each. ANd yes, when the bass on some of those stereos are going, I wonder how the driver keeps his/her hearing

66. Actually, bass frequencies
aren't nearly as damaging to hearing as loud midrange and treble frequencies, above 500Hz or so. However, another danger exists at those very low frequencies from too much amplitude, the danger of physical damage to internal organs as well as eardrums. But the ear can withstand a rather high volume at lower frequencies with no ill effects at all...it's just annoying as all hell to bystanders. Normal hearing-loss mechanisms come into play at midrage and treble frequencies.

But the screechy treble that often goes along with a boom car inside the vehicle is a potential hearing-loss cause, especially since it's often quite distorted.

I hate boom systems with a passion, but I am all over a well-done audiophile-grade car stereo, like a nice single 10" sub in a sealed box and nice component speakers up front with a good clean amplifier and solid source unit. The car can be a great intimate place to experience good music. :)

39. I hate the giant subwoofers, too.
The bass rattles the car so much, you can't hear anything else.

I'm no audiophile, but I would think bass should be reproduced in a round, full tone, not as if you took a hammer to it.

54. I had two 12" subwoofers in my old Thunderbird...
...but my system was tuned for fidelity, not boom. I hate those damn boom-cars, those systems couldn't reproduce real music if they had to. My 'bird sounded like a cathedral inside when I fired up Bach or Buxtehude! :D Small intimate club jazz? No problem. Front row at a Yes concert? No problem. Seventh row center at Symphony Hall? No probelm. Rattle neighbors' windows and annoy the public? Get away from me.

60. Well, I'm an audiophile and I have to say
one-note bass is the WORST. I'd rather have no bass at all. The systems these idiots are using are generally designed for maximum power output at one frequency, to the detriment of all the other frequencies. They play one note REALLY loud and suck reproducing the entire rest of the audio spectrum. I can't stand them.

72. personally i kinda dig "anti" spinners.
back in the day of creating your own gimmicks on custom cars, a few guys would do a similar thing, say on a chopped 51 merc with some dodge lancer "flipper" caps, you'd mount them either on bearings similar to the spinners with a heavy weight at the bottom, or directly to the front spindle, and the hubcaps would stay stationary, making the car appear to magically float down the road as you crept along.

I loathe most in car "accessories."

I mean . . . not only do they look incredibly stupid, but putting down force on the rear of a front wheel drive vehicle isn't exactly conducive to retaining traction at the drive wheels :P

63. Yes, but at very high rates of speeds Hondas and other sedans
are known to have lift-problems with the rear wheels. These enormous wings don't prevent this by creating downforce, or drag, they simple act as a giant-airbrake since 99.9% of Civics can barely hit 110 in the first place ;-)

57. I really gotta go with hydraulics.
The rest of that stuff is bad, too. But I just gotta wonder about people who think it's cool to be bouncing around in your car trying not to fall out or vomit.

58. There's a guy in Austin who has a chandelier hanging on the
inside of his car. I was sitting at a light at a Lamar cross street and I hear this loud tinkling sound. Looked over and the chandelier was swaying and hitting him in the head. I laughed so loud and long at this I almost missed an entire traffic light cycle.

Dude flipped me off and tinkled off into the sunset.

I think there is a point where you can go so far out you actually come back the other way (Einsteins theory and all that). Car chandelier's? Oh yeah thats what you call boomerang cool. "...and he tinkled off into the sunset."

69. 8 Track Players
short lived "techonology" - too young to have been a buyer while those were in cars - but do remember driving around with a few friends who got old cars with the 8 track (but there is nothing any more to play in it) players in the car.

74. Sorry I still go for the fluffy dice.
It had its time, and you can still buy it. But who the heck would want to hang a pair of fluffy dice from their rear view mirror? I threatened to buy my sister some once - as a joke. I got as far as purchasing them.

Mark.

75. are spinning rims and spinning hubaps considered the same
thing? I would say that spinning hubcaps are much tackier than spinning rims, although spinning rims are ALSO tacky

76. other:
1. grossly oversized wheels (anything larger than 20 in, ESPECIALLY those with a 35 profile or lower)

2. curb feelers (for those that still remember them)

3. incredibly cartoonish, massive, or overly complex sound/entertainment system...listen--if you have so much boom in your trunk that you have to STAND outside the vehicle and use a remote control to even turn it up to 10 percent volume, then it's too much....

Hondas. They make them sound like go-carts. Now add neon lights, some spinners and curb feelers and you've got yourself one comical cartoon.

Edited on Wed Apr-19-06 06:42 AM by jmm
If you paid $2,000 for a 1986 Honda Civic then you're a damn fool it you put $20,000 worth of speakers and stereo equipment in it.

"Honorable" mention goes to spinning rim sneakers, belt buckles, and jewelry.

87. Geez, you shoulda had "all of the above" as a choice!
Ones I didn't see listed in your choices or put up by others: crown air fresheners (but these are not as common as they used to be) and purple glowing lights for under the car. :grr:
