Anybody Else Getting Into "Big Love" On HBO? |
|
I avoided it until this week, but now that I'm catching up with the episodes thru On Demand, I have to say it's pretty good.
These wackos make The Sopranos look normal.

The back story of Barb's illness is really interesting. It sounds like Bill didn't intend to be a polygamist, but had to marry Nicki to secure a loan from her father. Barb was supposedly going to die.
The storyline with the young girl at the compound is sickening to me. It shows a sanitized version of what polygamy is really about. Old men lusting after young girls that never get a chance to grow up. On a side note, she has a beautiful voice.

8. Plus, she and the oldest son are very flirty with one another! |
|
Goes to show she is pretty immature, especially having to deal with the situation they are all in! BEing so secretive would drive me crazy!

15. Margene? I think she'll end up leaving. |
|
Nicki would probably be better off leaving polygamy. I look at her bitterness and see a lot of wasted potential. :(
Margene should run away with someone her own age.
Barb is annoying, but she and Bill deserve one another.

3. We got into it by accident... |
|
were watching Sopranos, of course, and it came on right after. Have been watching it from the beginning. It has an interesting (and different) storyline, and we love the actors. Noticed 2 weeks ago, on the credits, that Tom Hanks is the executive producer of Big Love. Thought that was interesting...

5. My only complaint so far is the less-than-stellar music |
|
which I see is written by Mark Mothersbaugh, who was the guy responsible for that insufferable theme music for The Rugrats.

I've loved Bill Paxton since he played Fredd-o in Apollo 13 (his wife played by Penny Marshall's and Rob Reiner's daughter, btw). I caught it just hanging around after the Sopranos and couldn't believe there was a show that could be entertaining and somewhat sympathetic to polygamy. I've gone back and watched all the episodes on HBO on Demand and caught a lot that I missed the first time around. Barb is definitely a reluctant participant to living "the principle" but fools herself into thinking they are different than Roman and his gang, and they are - but the Marge issue is skating close to the edge. I think Bill thinks it might have been a mistake too. He doesn't seem to have much use for Nikki, and seems to feel guilty for Marge. I can't wait until Nikki gets bagged with her BC pills! I think next week her spending compulsion will be discovered by Barb aka "Boss Lady" which should make for a good show. I can't wait!!

16. Wait, I thought Penny Marshall was openly gay? |
|
Was she with men and out now? Or am I just totally wrong?

20. She was married to Rob Reiner |

I don't know about her being gay, though. I almost 100% positive the young woman in the film is her daughter - - Tracy, I think. :hi:

I'm waiting for it to get better but starting to lose hope. It sure is lightweight compared to The Sopranos or Deadwood, more like a soap opera really.

it's hard to recognize friends in the characters. I know lots of LDS folks, and it's so hard not to shake them and say "It's a cult- get out! RUN!"

18. It still goes on, but it's a fast way to get excommunicated |
|
I have never met or heard of an active LDS polygamous family today. Those Utah polygamists we hear about in the news from time to time are not members of the mainstream LDS church. Many (most?) never were.

13. I'm really enjoying it - especially Harry Dean Stanton |
|
He's so fricking creepy especially around his 15 year old bride (who I think has a major storyline arc coming up because she seems to want to get away from that compound).
I find it interesting that wife #3 flirts with the oldest son of wife #1 too

17. I have really gotten into it. |
|
My great-great aunt Vaddy was a second wife. I met her in 1976, when she was in her 80s. She married a man who already had 12 chlidren with his first wife, then married Vaddy and had another 12 with her. He was a successful lawyer and they all lived happily together in their (I imagine) rather large home.

especially the dynamics between the wives. The competitiveness about sex, wearing poor Bill out, Bill's secret affair with Barb, Nikki's compulsive spending, Margene's desire for a friend balanced against the family's need to keep secret.
And, yes, the Harry Dean Stanton character is compellingly creepy.
