Neither one works, but I think the first one is the actual punchline, which makes the ovation remark wholly unnecessary - one doesn't continue to tell a joke after one get one's laugh (there can be small sub laughs in the buildup to the big one, but you don't follow up with a smaller one.)

And as for the first one, it lacks snap, brevity -- "punch," if you will.

I'm afraid your joke is a failure.
