Good Friday Morning, Crew!

:donut::hi:
Welcome to the Friday edition of the Early Morning Crew thread! :bounce: Here we are at the last work shift of the week, so I hope you have a fun weekend planned! :woohoo: It's that time of year when we should be outside on Saturday and Sunday cooking on the grill and having friends over for a barbecue!

I've been meaning to share a video I discovered on "You Tube" sometime back and have kept forgetting to post a link. It's a Brokeback Mountain video set to the song "Please Remember Me". It's a great video and I watch it all the time. Here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKr1Ou8_T3E Watch it...I think you'll love it!

Time to grab a cup of coffee, have a seat and get this day started with the Crew! :bounce: Are you ready? Let's do it! :bounce:

they're basically paying me for sitting on my butt right now. I know that sounds kinda like nirvana, but actually I feel really guilty about it. I'd much rather be doing useful work for them.

I just get paid a regular salary.

44. I do have a half-hour walk most days.
Though walking along whilst birds sing in the trees, and the occasional bunny hops in the undergrowth, and the murderous grey-squirrels taunt everybody else, is hardly the same thing as staring at a barely moving car a few feet ahead of oneself. :D

My drive to work is better than average fortunately, I sit in traffic jams quite infrequently, but I still have to drive too much. Actually I found catching the train to Wellingborough much more pleasant. The only difficulty was the couple of miles from Wellingborough station to work.

50. This is the problem.
Not wishing to get too serious in the Lounge...

Modern British life is built around the car - people are basically forced to use cars, even if they don't want to, which actually makes it much more difficult even if they wish to drive less. The decline in 'bus services merely exacerbates this, which then creates less demand, which creates lower levels of service.......here's a big :grr: for the deregulation of the 'bus system.

59. Yes, transport *has* to be subsidised
it can't be run as a business. Because when you look at it like that, the very notion of little-used services to out of the way places becomes suspect. This is why Beeching cut all the branch lines - in a Labour government, I might add.

But the effectiveness of the transport system actually depends on all those little nodes that are inefficient when viewed from a commercial perspective.

Anyway, all effective transport systems are subsidised. Cars wouldn't be anywhere near as attractive if all roads were owned privately and maintained by money collected from tolls. (Even before you consider trying to turn a profit from them). Instead motorists get about on very handsome subsidy from the public purse.

So it isn't about economics at all. It was a choice. Somebody decided, long ago, that we didn't want public transport any more, and that everyone would get about by car.

64. Putting driving costs close to their real cost would be a reasonable start
My 'A' Level economics teacher always said that petrol should be between £50 and £100 per gallon - somehow I can't see that happening.

Here is where I disagree with the anti-car lobby
Edited on Fri Apr-21-06 05:59 AM by billyskank
They think that motoring should be made so expensive that people are forced to think about alternatives. I agree. But they think this should happen first. Here, I disagree. As you noted a couple of posts above, in most places outside London alternatives simply do not exist. So people will be forced to pay the high prices because they cannot do anything else. Furthermore this would be highly regressive, because poor people would be hit far harder than rich people.

This is of course exactly what the government was trying to do with the fuel tax escalator until the protests in 2000, after which hiking fuel duty became politically impossible. It was a very cynical policy; they get to claim green credentials whilst not actually doing anything to solve the problem - into the bargain, they increase tax revenue! Everybody's happy, except those of us who have to drive.

I think the anti-car lobby assume that everybody in a car is Mr. Toad, simply burning petrol for the fun of it.

What we actually need is a rebuilding of our public transport infrastructure that happens in conjunction with a gradual raising of the cost of motoring. It would have to be finely finessed.

Of course, it would take a very strong government to get this past the pro-car lobby.

83. That's one of the problems of our Londonocentric politics.
Plus there are large portions of the country where public transport is never going to work in any practical sense.

My own view is that we need to do three things together - build up public transport, raise driving costs, and develop alternatives to travel where possible. If people don't need to travel in the first place then the method of transport becomes somewhat moot.

The job thing is sort of interesting. They want to start a new division and put him in charge. But they're not making a formal offer until they know when he's moving up there. And they won't have the job ready until June or even July. But they definitely want him. It doesn't pay as much as he makes now, but the salary would grow as the division grows. I'm a little nervous about it, but I'm sure it'll work out.

176. Hair and kitty box.
Scoop the box twice/day, sweep up the litter. I swiffer the floor every day -- it's AMAZING how much stuff comes off it! And it's white, so it's not like dirt is hiding. There's also the puke check. It's definitely hair ball season! Then wash the pet blankets that we keep on the furniture. Check the girls for their soft paws ... replace if necessary. *sigh* I'm tired already.

Ok, let's get this show on the road! I'll be back in the lounge after I get some things done. :hi:

I know how you feel. I wanted to stay in my bed this morning as well. But no, I had to get to work. Oh well, I am almost done for this week. And the sun is shining so the mood is good and I look forward to go for a drink in a café with my friend after work. Maybe I can get off a bit early.

Working from home would be a tad bit difficult in retail - pity because it can be a good change. I wouldn't want it all of the time - but one day per week (I do actually achieve work as well) is very good.

When I fall asleep, I generally sleep for a solid 9 hours or more at a stretch-even if my alarm goes off-and it takes an hour for me to get ready. Even if I went to bed right now, I'd still miss the exam.

So what I'm going to do is take about 6 No-Doz capsules at 1:30-1:45. That should ensure I'm awake enough for my exam.

It's always strange to hear about accidents like that when they occur on roads you travel all the time. Once, in Missouri, a couple I knew was going under a bridge which a major interstate crossed over and an 18 wheeler lost control and crashed over the railing at the same time they were going under and smashed their car to smithereens. Of course, they both died instantly. Now, I get nervous every time I have to go under a bridge like that. x(

And it's only about 10 minutes away from our property, so we can keep an eye on the builders. The realtor told us it would be pretty hard to find something that would allow the cats (usually they have a limit of 2 pets). And there were 4 other people scheduled to see this house! But harleydad got there first. One couple called just after harleydad did and said they'd take it sight unseen. He sent me a pic on my cell phone and it looks nice. :bounce:

If everything goes OK with this house (inspections and appraisal are happening this afternoon), we can close anytime! The rental will be ready on May 20. The company he interviewed for are waiting for us to move before they make a formal offer. I think if we gave them a date, they would get the ball rolling. I would definitely like to move by the 6th of June so I don't have to renew my FL car insurance.

It's SO hard to find place that accept pets. We had the same problem when we came down here! At the time we had a Golden Retriever and two cats ... and about 6 parakeets. The limit was two pets under 20 pounds each. And most of the places that DO allow them tend to be a bit on the trashy side because of pet damage. Will you be using a realtor?

158. Well, WE'VE outgrown the place.
I don't know HOW to proceed, to tell you the truth. I certainly understand places not wanting pets, but still...I can't give up Tony. He's my boy!

165. A realtor can help.
Most of them don't do rentals unless it looks like you're going to buy something later. But they might be able to steer you towards a property manager. That's a lot easier than trying to do it on your own. Tell them what you want and let them do the rest. The nice thing about working with a property manager is that they already know what all the places are like and what they allow.

166. That's what we may end up having to do.
I was looking a few minutes ago at listings here online and there are SO many different ones...I didn't really know where to start.

173. Exactly.
It doesn't cost anything for a realtor or property manager -- they get paid from the other end. I was starting to do the online thing and it was making me nuts.

I'm going to have to get going in a few minutes. Big day today and I should get started. As always, I've enjoyed talking with you! You can thank Sophie for getting me up early all week long.

Have a great day! Say hello to greekspeak for me. :loveya:  :hi:

90. Morning Clint!
Seems like everyone is ready for the weekend. Was out late again last night (lecture) so I guess I'm continuing torturing my body. I think I'd call in sick today if I wouldn't have to work on a project that culminates tomorrow evening. Whew! Think I'll sleep in tomorrow morning.

Thought I'd do a little dancing to your song of the day this morning. Maybe it'll perk me up.

It's a good song to dance too, that's for sure! Yes, sounds like you're still torturing yourself with these late nights. We ALL need to sleep in once in a while, so if you can tomorrow morning, you should!

112. Yes I do plan
on sleeping in tomorrow, but only until 6:00. Rowing in the morning. But I can always go back to bed when I get home if I feel the need. The rest of the weekend is mine, so I'm planning NOTHING. And just live it moment by moment.

115. Clint!
Morning! :hi: Friday. I'm so glad. Working at a friend's antique store tomorrow and spending the rest of it in the yard getting the flower beds ready to plant. My daughter's stying in town this weekend, so there won't be alot of angst to deal with. We're going through a rough time right now, but it should pass soon. (I hope!)

Have I told you how much I LOVE it on the farm?
