4. Get the Airplane back together.... |
|
I have to say that when the Airplane split, I followed Hot Tuna. But hearing a live version of "Have You Seen the Saucers"....now that would be awesome....alas, I don't think Papa John Creech is amongst the living.

He died in 1994. I saw him play back in the 70's.

for their later incarnation which gave us the worst song ever recorded "We Built This City (on Rock and Roll)".
:)
That said, I get to see Hot Tuna (which is comprised of two original Airplane members) in June, mere steps from my front door :).

the only real Airplane member responsible for "We Built This City" was Grace Slick, and I believe it was while she was drinking.
My understanding is, to the extent there's a functioning Airplane/Starship today, Paul Kantner pilots it. Sometimes a few of the others are there. Jack is the likeliest, Marty sometimes, Grace very rarely. There's some silly feud between Paul and Jorma that precludes their playing together. (And just for completeness, I note that old drummers Skip Spence and Spencer Dryden are both dead.)
Last time they staged an Airplane reunion, it really wasn't worth a hill of beans. I don't see how another attempt would fare any better. I have one of the Kantner aggregation's late records, I think it's Deep Space/Virgin Sky, and it's really weak stuff, even with Marty, Jack and Grace on board. The real problem is, none of them remember how to write compelling songs-- it might as well be "We Built This City" all over again.

I could never take them seriously after that. Lucky you on your June date. I met Jorma many years ago at a small bar in Portsmouth, NH. It was open mike nite and he play a great version of "Hesitation Blues". It was one of those things that you never forget....

13. no, it's a completely separate event. territory days is held over the |
|
memorial day weekend, and this date was chosen so as NOT to conflict with territory days, which is always a lot of fun, too. how long ago were you here? and what part of ohio (I lived in akron when I was a child)? I am very lucky indeed, can see the peak from my windows, too.
