35. Lots of people change their names.
Would you feel sad if you heard my brother wanted to be called "Bill" instead of "Billy" because he isn't a little kid anymore?

Some Chinese names are *really* unfortunate in an English context. I live on "Dong Fang" road for example. I know a girl named "DuoDuo" pronounced "DooDoo". Is it going to be better for her in the long term, living in America, to walk around saying my name is "DooDoo" or to use an Americanized name with her American friends?

37. Planning on naming any of your kids after their parents? Or grandparents?
Edited on Sat Apr-22-06 11:41 AM by applegrove
Cause darn if American names are not actually not Billy, or Sarah, or Ian. Those are names from somewhere else. They are family names or cultural names. They are not american ones.

39. What does that have to do with anything?
I never claimed there were "American" names or said there was anything wrong with cultural names. I simply don't think kids should be lumbered indefinitely with a culturally tone-deaf name because that's their "real" name and they should honor their heritage.

I came with an inch of being named "Albina" after an ancient Italian relative I've never met. I never would have left the house until I was 21. I thank my parents daily for not hanging the "Albina"tross around my neck. It's just an ugly name taken out of it's Italian context.

Imagine you or your husband were sent to work in Dubai. You enroll your darling son Nick in preschool. You pick him up after the first day and he's crying hysterically because all the other students and even the teacher are sniggering at him all day and he doesn't understand why. You ask your Arab colleagues only to find out that "Nick" is one of the most obscene words in Arabic. Oops. Do you force your kid to use a name that means "Penis" or "Fuck" in the local language, or do you start shopping around for a nice neutral "UAE" name to call him?

You were the one who said you were heart-broken because a kid changed his name. Maybe he was getting shit from the other students. Is he ultimately going to be more damaged from having a local-name he uses at school and a home-name he uses with his parents or going through 12 years of school with a name like "Doo-Doo", "Wang", "Dong", etc. etc.?

Let the kid embrace their heritage in college. In the meantime, If Duoduo gets through a day without crying because her friends call her "Kathy" or if Dat Ho can concentrate a little more on his alphabet if the teacher calls him "Jimmy" or even if Zhongguo gets tired of saying and spelling his name 6,000 times a day who are we to judge them for adopting a more Western name at school?

I'm in the process of choosing my Chinese name because I'm sick to death of trying to sign my Western name in the teeny tiny signature spaces of Chinese forms. I'm still trying to choose a good family name. I like "Haiying" for the personal name because it's relatively easy to write and say. Am I doing my identity irreperable harm by using different names in different contexts? Or course not. I've always had nicknames. When I lived in Germany, I had a German name. When I studied Russian, I chose a Russian name. Welcome to the global village.
