Travolta, J. Lo sign on for big-screen ‘Dallas’
‘Bend it Like Beckham’s’ Chadha will direct; film will be released in late ’07

LONDON - Gurinder Chadha will direct John Travolta and Jennifer Lopez in a big-screen version of the prime-time soap opera "Dallas."

The British filmmaker, who directed 2002's "Bend it Like Beckham," said Friday she had signed a deal with 20th Century Fox. Travolta will star as the conniving Texas oil baron J.R. Ewing and Lopez will play his wife, Sue Ellen. Filming is set to begin in October, with the movie slated for a late 2007 release.

1. It's really a sad statement about Hollywood
When they're releasing movies based on old, bad TV shows, like the recent Dukes of Hazzard, and now Dallas. It's just plain sad that talent, creativity and originality have been sacrificed at the alter of profits.

3. I liked Dallas, the Friday night soap opera.
I may feel differently about Dallas, the feature film they are already ruining with messed-up casting.

4. I was never a fan of Dallas
But even that personal bias aside, c'mon, can't they come up with something original? Is that too much to ask?

Personally, I loved Bewitched when I was growing up. But I find the fact that they made a movie out of it just pathetic.

It used to be that cinematic ideas would go from the large screen to the small screen, now they've reversed the process, and it's just plain bad:shrug:

5. I think the popularity of the TV-to-movie trend is based on nostalgia.
Moviemakers are capitalizing on the public's fondness for the past.

2. I read somewhere that Hagman himself endorsed Travolta...
Linda Gray (Sue Ellen) apparently said that it would not be easy for someone else to step into a role so closely associated with another actress.

I don't like the Travolta choice OR the Jennifer Lopez choice. Honestly. Jennifer Lopez as Sue Ellen Ewing??
