How much does it cost to have a web site?
Do you just by the domain name and then it is yours?

1. You have the buy the domain ...
and then you have to buy hosting with a hosting company that hosts your domain on their server . You find good ones ( hosting companies and domain buying sites ) really cheap now compared to 6 years ago .

5. You can get free hosting
You have to pay for registering your domain name--mind that you'll have to pay for renewal of it every few years or so.

Places like geocities at yahoo (geocities.yahoo.com) will host sites for free but put advertising on your page.

7. Or Blogger.com
They can host your site for free. You even get a name like *****.blogspot.com

Or you can register a domain name and have it point to your "*****.blogspot.com" name.

8. Buy the domain name, and the rest depends upon what you want to do.
If you don't mind someone else's ads, there are plenty of free sites you can link your domain name to.

In your searches for inexpensive hosts and registrars you'll probably run across godaddy.com but please do check out the red-white-and-blue libertarian rants of Bob Parsons before you walk down that path...

You can set up a very simple site for $30 a year. Personally I try to stay away from the mega-corp hosts whenever I can, but some clients are uncomfortable with that. I could host websites myself, but it wouldn't make me happy.

In my work I have internet hosts I love, and internet hosts I hate, and it often has to do with the nature of the website I'm working on and the preferences of my clients.

My own personal web site is hosted by San Francisco people who are not upset by materials that would violate the "Terms of Service" of most internet hosts. I don't post much of that, but it's always nice to know I can.

10. There are lots of totally free Web Hosts around but with most of them
Edited on Tue Apr-25-06 05:07 AM by corksean
you have to put up with Advertising or those bloody annoying pop-ups.
A lot of them don't support .php. CGi or MySQL either which can be a major restriction.
I have used Awardspace (www.awardspace.com)which has no forced advertising and good file support but like all the other free hosts there are restrictions on file size and bandwidth so you can't host video or very large pictures. You also have to put up with a clunky address (http://usregimechange.awardspace.com or something similar). Having said that the server up-time was very good and apart from the restrictions mentioned above the service was as good as any paid host I have used.
Check out http://www.thefreesite.com/Free_Web_Space/ which has a decent list of free hosts or you can try Googling "free web hosting".
Good luck.
