I need a white noise machine. Suggestions? |
|
I need one (maybe two) white noise generators to help my toddler sleep since it's just about time to put away the humidifier.
I have no idea where to buy one. Any suggestions??

1. There's a joke here involving Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.... |
|
... But I ain't sayin' it....
Nope. Not me.
Seriously, though, the kmla house uses a standard, ordinary, box fan as a white noise generator.
Works like a charm on the jr. kmla's...

tuned off-frequency.
FM "static" is white noise.
Turning up the bass seems to help.

7. I experimented with making colored noise cds |
|
Cheaper than a machine, runs for eighty minutes, and can be used anywhere you have a cd player.
I never got around to marketing them, but I think I still have a few copies somewhere...
Technical info: There are three 'colors' of noise: White, Pink, and Brown. White is true random noise (it's not really pleasant to listen to as it sounds like a sharp hiss). Brown is the lower frequency noise, and it sounds like a waterfall. Pink is the best, as it's right in the middle of the spectrum, and it sounds like rainfall.

You're right, pink noise is more pleasant than white noise.
Pink noise has equal acoustic energy across the spectrum, white noise is equal power across the spectrum. I had to look up brown noise, that's noise that decreases in power as frequency rises.
Maybe I'll just find a cheap noisy fan and go from there...

9. I have a white noise CD |

with the sound of ocean waves that helps me sleep. (I've seen others with the sounds of vacuum cleaners, air conditioners, etc.) I suppose you could use a CD in a player that's set to repeat the CD if you need it on all night. Cheaper than a machine if you don't need a variety of sounds.

|

Just a small one. Ever since was a wee one I have had to have the sound of a fan, or I could not go to sleep. I don't like white noise machines. I don't want to hear water or birds when I am trying to sleep:).
